All-Around Attack Lifts Raiders in Rivalry Matchup

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The cross-county matchup between Northwestern and Dordt always brings plenty of intrigue, and this year it was the pitching of Dylan Kirkeby and a grand slam from Sam Stanford that brought the fireworks to Sioux County.

GAME 1: NWC 2, DORDT 1
Pitching Decisions
Win: Dylan Kirkeby (2-4)
Loss: J. Hughes (1-6)
Save: None

How It Happened
A battle on the mound punctuated game one of the four-game weekend series, as Dylan Kirkeby faced off against Dordt's top arm. Despite giving up a run in the first, Kirkeby was locked in when it mattered most in the complete game showing.

The Raiders knotted it up at 1-1 in the third, with Sam Stanford continuing his stellar season with an RBI single up the middle with two outs and a runner on second.

Next, in the fourth, the Raiders created more action on the base paths as a Drew Dirkx leadoff double later turned into a run off the bat of Mason Porepp, scoring Dirkx from third on the play.

With the game in the balance, Dordt put the tying run on first base in the seventh. Isaac Short fired the ball down to second on a steal attempt before Kirkeby shut down the final batter to give the Raiders the win.

Game Notes:
  • Dylan Kirkeby threw eight strikeouts in the complete game victory.
  • Kirkeby sits three strikeouts away from becoming Northwestern's career strikeouts leader.
  • The senior righty only allowed one run and issued one walk.
  • Sam Stanford went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI single.
  • Devin Dirkx doubled.
  • Mason Porepp drove in a run and had a stolen base.
  • Luke Wroblewski nabbed second base for his 12th steal of the year.

How It Happened
A grand slam off the bat of Sam Stanford gave Northwestern momentum early in a 9-4 win over Dordt.

Both teams were left out of the hit column in the first two and a half frames before Northwestern loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third. Stanford stepped up to the plate, hitting a full-count bomb to left center for the grand slam, giving Northwestern the game's first lead.

The Raiders added on in the fifth, as Drew Dykstra saw the bases full and pulled the ball into deep left field, rushing all the way to third for the bases-clearing triple. In the next at-bat, Dykstra was rewarded with a run as an error made the game 9-0.

Dordt put together four runs in the seventh, two on a home run by Jason Carrig that made it 9-4, but Peyton Montecinos then entered, pitching lights-out in relief to give Northwestern two wins on Friday.

Game Notes:
  • Sam Stanford hit a grand slam, his fourth home run of the year.
  • Drew Dykstra hit a bases-clearing triple, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
  • Luke Wroblewski drew three walks and stole his 13th base.
  • Bryce Click also had a steal, moving to 10-for-10 on attempts this season.
  • Brad Tornow threw an effective six innings, striking out nine and giving up two hits.
  • Peyton Montecinos shut the door with two strikeouts, one hit, and no runs over 2.1 innings.
