Softball Falls for First Time, Bounces Back with Win in Monday Split

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 15 Red Raider softball team saw its unbeaten record blemished on Monday, dropping their first game to St. Francis (Ill.) before coming back with a 6-1 win over Park-Gilbert (Ariz.).

How It Happened
Northwestern was shut out in its first loss of the season and first day at the Tucson Invitational Games.

The Fighting Saints got on the board in the first inning, scoring a run on a fielder's choice to make the score 1-0.

They added two more in the third, scoring with two out and two on to extend their lead to 3-0.

Even though the Raiders put four runners on, three on walks and one on a hit-by-pitch, St. Francis pitcher Kiersten Manning completed the no-hitter and earned the win.

How It Happened
The Raiders bounced back in the win column in the second game of the day, using a five-run fifth inning to complete a 6-1 win on Monday afternoon.

Northwestern broke on to the scoreboard in the third, using small ball to plate a run. Charli Bomgaars drew a leadoff walk and stole second before coming home on a sacrifice bunt and groundout to make it 1-0.

They created separation by adding five more in the fifth, sending nine batters to the plate in the inning. Kameryn Etherington hit an RBI single with a runner on second, making the score 2-0 before Tatum Schmalbeck gave her team another run with a bases-loaded single. In the next at-bat, Jori Hajek recorded a base hit to left, bringing two home for a 5-0 lead. The lead stretched to 6-0 on an RBI groundout to put the fifth run of the frame across.
