Pate’s Walkoff Blast Lifts Raiders in GPAC Opener

Raiders post five-inning shutout in game one

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – A 16-day layoff did not slow the No. 11-ranked Red Raider softball team, who showed their strengths in both tight games and routs in tonight's GPAC kickoff.

"Today we showed up with confidence not only in ourselves, but in our teammates as well," freshman infielder Abby Pate commented. "The juice we had in the last inning was insane and it showed. Although we came out on top, we still have room to improve. We are not satisfied. Go Raiders!"

Pitching Decisions
Win: Kameryn Etherington (10-1)
Loss: M. Gray (4-6)

How It Happened
Northwestern jumped ahead early to start conference play with a win on Wednesday night. Hitting in the first inning with one out and runners at the corners, Chloe Gallegos began her solid outing with an RBI double, scoring a run and placing two in scoring position. After an RBI groundout by Tatum Schmalbeck in the next at-bat, Jori Hajek smacked the ball into center field for an RBI double, stretching the lead to 3-0.

The Raiders continued to score in each inning, using the steal-and-advance tactic in the second to bring Charli Bomgaars across, while Maddie Kvatek singled into right to bring Annika Jahn in from second.

Leading 6-0 heading into the fifth, Gwen Mikkelsen had an RBI single to center before Gallegos ended the game on the eight-run mercy rule with an RBI double.

How It Happened
A pinch-hit, walkoff home run by Abby Pate made it a game to remember as the Raiders erased a 2-1 deficit to come away with a win in extras.

The Raiders struck first when Ashtyn Billings lined a double to score Maddie Kvatek from second in the second frame.

Mount Marty took its first lead of the night on a double in the left field corner to plate two in the fifth.

It did not take long for a counter by Northwestern, as Kvatek pushed one past the outstretched glove of the left fielder to knot the game up, scoring Alyssa Vortherms from second.

After both teams left a runner aboard in the seventh, it took extra innings to decide a winner. In the eighth, Jori Hajek led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Head coach Shane Bouman then called on Abby Pate for the pinch-hit opportunity. With a 1-2 count and one away, Pate slammed the ball into left, watching it fly over the fence to lead the Raiders to victory.

Game Notes:
Up Next: Northwestern is back in the ASB Sports Complex for a doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
