Northwestern’s Comeback Effort Stalled in Season Opener

Dykstra drives in two runs

WICHITA, Kan. – An eighth-inning rally was not enough as the Red Raider baseball team (0-1, 0-0 GPAC) dropped their season opener to Friends (Kan.) (7-1, 0-0 KCAC) in a nine-inning contest.

Pitching Decisions
Win: F. Moscoso (2-0)
Loss: Jacob Thurm (0-1)
Save: V. Vigil (1)

How It Happened
The home Falcons broke the scoreless tie in the third, bringing in the two runners in scoring position to take a 2-0 lead. They extended their advantage in the next at-bat, knocking in the runner from second to make the score 3-0.

Northwestern scored its first run in the fourth as Mo Watson hit a single into right to score Luke Wroblewski from third. The Raiders then tied the game at 3-3 when Sam Stanford hit a two-RBI single to send Mason Porepp and Drew Dykstra across the plate.

Friends responded by adding four in the sixth and another run in the seventh, as the Raiders needed a run to get back within reach.

The eighth inning was a productive one for Northwestern, with Brody Ayers hitting a bases-loaded single to add a run and make it 8-4. In the following plate appearance, Drew Dykstra doubled, scoring two and putting the Raiders within two runs.

With Northwestern needing two runs to extend the game, the Falcons put together a 1-2-3 inning to end the game in the top of the ninth.
