Pair of Shutouts Moves Raiders to 3-0

Krachey homers in game one, Mikkelsen with four RBIs in game two

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern softball team (3-0, 0-0 GPAC) cruised through opening weekend, taking wins over Kansas Wesleyan and Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in today's action.

"We are finding our rhythm," commented infielder Gwen Mikkelsen. "It's early in the season and we are learning through success and failure."

How It Happened
Ravyn Krachey hit a two-run home run and an RBI double as No. 15 Northwestern took down Kansas Wesleyan in a morning matchup.

Getting started in the first inning, Chloe Gallegos knocked in a run when she singled with two runners aboard, making it 1-0.

The Raiders sent two across the plate in the next inning, first with Gwen Mikkelsen hitting a bases-loaded single. In the next at-bat, Kameryn Etherington reached on an error, allowing Jori Hajek to score from third.

In the fifth, Gallegos led off the inning with a double before Krachey launched a two-run home run, the first of her Red Raider career, to make it 5-0.

The sixth saw the Raiders put the game away, as Krachey doubled with two on and no outs, bringing a run home to make the score 6-0. Gallegos came around to score on an error before Hajek doubled with the bases loaded to end the game early at 9-0.

How It Happened
Kameryn Etherington pitched a six-inning shutout and Gwen Mikkelsen had four hits and four RBIs as Northwestern won their second contest of the day, 12-0 over Culver-Stockton (Mo.).

Northwestern went ahead early with a three-run frame in the second, with Maddie Kvatek and Jori Hajek both recording RBI singles. Mikkelsen also had an RBI groundout to send Kvatek across the plate.

With Etherington keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard, the Raiders added to their lead with an RBI single by Randi Childress to make the score 4-0 early in the fifth. Childress later came around to score, while Mikkelsen hit an RBI double to left to bring the run total to seven.

The Raiders nearly doubled their scoring total in the sixth inning alone, plating five runs with RBIs from Etherington, Childress, Mikkelsen, and Alyssa Vortherms.

  • Gwen Mikkelsen went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a double.
  • Kameryn Etherington pitched six shutout innings, only allowing three hits.
  • Etherington also went 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate.
  • Randi Childress recorded two hits with two RBIs and three runs scored.
