Pitching Showcase Helps Raiders Against NSAA Foes

Etherington and Schmalbeck combine for one-hitter, Kralik with six scoreless innings

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The No. 15-ranked Northwestern softball team continued its stellar play, improving to 13-0 with wins over two North Star Athletic Association opponents, defeating Dickinson State (N.D.) and Mayville State (N.D.) on Friday evening.

How It Happened
Dickinson State plated two runs in the first, but that did not stop the Red Raider softball team from improving to 12-0 behind an efficient pitching performance from Kate Kralik.

After the top half of the first saw the Blue Hawks storm ahead, Northwestern drew back to even in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Gwen Mikkelsen hit a triple to opposite field, while Jewel Bergstrom stole second a couple of plate appearances later to put two in scoring position. Chloe Gallegos hit an RBI groundout to advance both runners before Randi Childress singled to tie it at 2-2.

Both teams combined for two hits over the next three innings, but the bottom of the fifth saw the Red Raiders pull ahead for what would be the game-winning run. Charli Bomgaars led off the inning with a base hit, advanced, and stole third to end up 60 feet from home with two away. Kameryn Etherington followed with an RBI double to give Northwestern a 3-2 lead.

The Blue Hawks put runners at the corners in their half of the seventh but were unable to send home the tying run as the Raiders remained unbeaten.

How It Happened
Runs came in bunches as the Red Raiders won their second game of the night, only needing five innings to take down the Mayville State Comets.

Northwestern put up nine runs in the first two innings alone, getting five of their first six batters aboard to go up 3-0 after one, before a six-run second inning to move ahead 9-0. In the sescond, all six runs came with two outs, starting with a 2-RBI single from Chloe Gallegos. Each of the four additional runs came across on a walk or hit-by-pitch with nowhere to put extra runners.

The Raiders put themselves in position to end the game early with a four-run fourth inning, as Jewel Bergstrom singled in a pinch-hit appearance to drive in two runs, with one more crossing on the play with an error. Bergstrom then came around from second on an RBI double by Kameryn Etherington, capping the Northwestern run total at 13.

Game Notes:
Up Next: The Raiders will close their time at the American State Bank Sports Complex tomorrow, playing Waldorf at 10:00 a.m. and Dakota State at 2:00 p.m.
