Northwestern Splits Season Series with Morningside, Moves into Tie for GPAC Lead

Sterk scores 23 points, enters top-10 in all-time scoring

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Bultman Center was full of energy for a GPAC matchup with plenty to play for, as the Northwestern men's basketball team held off Morningside 90-81.

"Our guys locked in and competed; they battled all game," commented head coach Kris Korver. "In games like this, three plays usually decide the outcome. Tonight, our guys made big plays down the stretch to close it out."

Leading the entire way other than an early 5-5 tie, the Raiders protected home court in a fast and physical battle. With 12 minutes to go in the first half, Conner Geddes sparked the crowd with back-to-back baskets to take a 28-19 lead. Morningside came within three with under 10 to go, but a Northwestern timeout saw the Raiders make the adjustments to take an 11-point lead with 90 seconds until the break, in part to consecutive threes for Dillon Carlson during a 10-0 run.

Holding a 50-46 lead coming out of the locker room, Northwestern took its largest lead of the night on a four-point play from Craig Sterk to make it 65-51. After two free throws from the Mustangs, another highlight play got the crowd excited when Keyton Moser went coast-to-coast with the spin move in the lane to bring the lead back to 14.

Despite a late push from Morningside to cut it to four, the Raiders received timely shots from Sterk and Alex Van Kalsbeek to ice the game and enter the second half of the week with a 90-81 win.

"I'm proud of our guys. We held serve at home," Korver said.
