Huge Second Half Guides Raiders to Comeback Win

FREMONT, Neb. – Trailing by as many as 18, the Northwestern Red Raiders rallied to beat the Midland Warriors 90-84, powered by a 64-point second half.

"I think that we had a pretty disappointing first half, but we really shared the ball in the second half, got the ball moving, and only had two second half turnovers," said head coach Kris Korver. "They were really dialed in to make life hard for Alex, so guys like Conner, Kaleb, and Dillon did a good job stepping up and making shots. I also thought our coaches put the right personnel on the floor to take advantage of what Midland was trying to do."

While Midland was eliminated from postseason contention last week, their effort against the 12th ranked Red Raiders more so resembled a team fighting to get in. The Warriors would open up the game on an 8-0 run. The lead would reach double-digits 9 minutes into the game. A pair of Dillon Carlson 3-pointers would account for 6 of Northwestern's 10 points as they trailed 20-10. The Warriors continued to put on a show for the home crowd, extending their lead to a game-high 18 points (36-18) with 3 minutes to go in the half. A pair of Conner Geddes 3's would bring the score to a more manageable 38-26 deficit heading to halftime. Nine Raider turnovers compared to only two for Midland would be a big factor in the half.

Needing a win to remain in contention for the GPAC crown, Northwestern came out a different team in the 2nd half. A 14-4 run, with 3's from Carlson and Craig Sterk would cut the Midland lead to 2 at 42-40. Midland would punch back, gaining a 7-point advantage only for the Raiders to respond with another 14-4 run, capped by an and-one layup from Keyton Moser, giving the Raiders their first lead of the afternoon with 10 minutes remaining. The Raiders would keep their foot on the gas, with a pair of 3's from Kaleb Booth and Geddes, followed by a dunk by Sterk would give them a 68-58 lead. Midland continued to claw their way back in the game, but Alex Van Kalsbeek would score 12 of his 18 points in the final 6 minutes of the game to guide the Raiders to a 90-84 win.

The Raiders would shoot 79% (22/28) from the field and 66% (8/12) from 3-point land in the second half, tallying 17 assists on those 22 made field goals.

GAME NOTES
  • Dillon Carlson led the Raiders with 20 points, his fourth time reaching that mark this season.
