Raiders’ Season Ends in Pool Play

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – A historic, unbeaten run came to a close on Friday morning as No. 1 Northwestern fell in four sets to No. 19 Montana Western.

How It Happened
The first set of the match saw Montana Western take an early lead with a kill by Jordan Olson at the start, followed by Northwestern error to bring the score to 2-0. The Raiders managed to tie the score at 2-2, but the Bulldogs quickly regained the lead with a series of successful plays, including a kill by Danyel Martin assisted by Taylor Petersen, pushing the score to 4-2. Despite Northwestern's efforts to close the gap, including a service ace by Alysen Dexter, Montana Western maintained their momentum and secured the set with a 25-19 victory.

In the second set, the Raiders secured a 25-17 victory over the Bulldogs. The set began with a Montana Western point, but Northwestern quickly equalized with a kill from Zavyr Metzger. Northwestern then gained momentum with a 3-0 run to make the score 5-3. After Montana Western called a timeout at 13-7, the Raiders continued to extend their lead, with Dexter contributing significantly to the scoring through both kills and forcing errors. Despite a late surge from Montana Western, who narrowed the gap to 19-14 with a series of successful blocks, the Raiders maintained their lead to close the set with a kill by Jazlin Douma.

The Bulldogs began the third set with a strong start, scoring the opening six points. Northwestern responded with a series of points, highlighted by Douma's two consecutive kills, reducing the deficit to 6-4. Despite Northwestern's efforts, Montana Western maintained control, extending their lead to 15-8 on the block. The Raiders managed a late surge, closing the gap to 23-19 after a service ace by Dexter, but the Bulldogs secured the set with a final score of 25-19.

With a comeback window closing, the Raiders started strong with a kill by Metzger, putting them up 1-0. However, the Bulldogs quickly responded to take control with consecutive points, working up to a 4-1 advantage. Northwestern managed to close the gap to 10-7 on a service error, but Montana Western maintained their lead, extending it to 18-11 following a kill by Dani Brown. Despite a late rally by Northwestern, cutting the deficit to 20-18 with a series of points, the Bulldogs secured the set with a 25-20 victory, highlighted by a decisive kill from Jazi Smith.

  • Douma ends her three years at Northwestern with 1,396 kills.
  • Alysen Dexter notched 15 kills and two aces, ending her career with 201 aces and 1,536 kills.
