Men’s Basketball Picks Up Top-10 Win in Tennessee

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – In a battle between newly-ranked top-10 teams, No. 8 Northwestern used a commanding first half to take down No. 9 Cumberlands on day one of The Show.

"Cumberlands is an excellent ball club," stated head coach Kris Korver after the game. "Our guys were locked in for 40 minutes and gave an excellent team effort."

The sides traded points in the first five minutes before Jesse Van Kalsbeek sparked a 9-0 rally to go ahead 19-10 with 12:15 left in the first half. Cumberlands came back as close as three points over six minutes later, but the Raiders responded with three consecutive treys by Kaleb Booth to pull ahead by double digits late in the half. Jesse Van Kalsbeek capped off the first with a slam, putting Northwestern ahead 42-27 at the break.

With the Patriots sticking around and working back into single digits in the first three minutes of the second, the Raiders answered by pushing the lead over 20 points, obtaining their largest lead at 69-47 on an Alex Van Kalsbeek and-one. Despite a late effort from Cumberlands, Northwestern closed their performance with a Zach LaFave three to secure an 88-74 win.

"Zach played really well on both ends and on the glass, Alex and Jesse were tough to handle, and Kaleb defended really well and hit some timely shots," Korver added. "We got better in this one."
