Raiders Move On to GPAC Championship with Three-Set Win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Northwestern defeated Hastings 3-0 in the GPAC semifinals on Wednesday in Orange City, advancing to its second consecutive GPAC tournament championship.

Northwestern started strong in the first set, with Jazlin Douma contributing multiple kills early on, including two consecutive kills at 9-7 and 11-7. The Broncos managed to keep the score close with Makenna Sutter and Majesta Valasek each executing key kills, helping to tie the game at 14-14. The Red Raiders then pulled ahead with a series of kills from Alysen Dexter and Savonne Sterk, extending their lead to 19-14. Despite a late push from Hastings, Northwestern secured the set 25-20, capitalizing on several attack errors and bad sets from Hastings.

The second set of the volleyball match between Northwestern and Hastings saw a competitive start, with Hastings initially taking the lead 3-1 following a kill by Miriam Miller. The Red Raiders then found momentum, tying the score at 3-3 with a block by Savonne Sterk and Maddy Sampson. Hastings struggled with errors, allowing Northwestern to gain a slight edge, but Hastings responded with consecutive kills by Majesta Valasek and Makenna Sutter, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of Hastings. Northwestern capitalized on Hastings' service errors and attack errors, eventually closing the set with a 25-20 victory, highlighted by a service ace by Jazlin Douma and strong defensive play by Jazlin Douma and Maddy Sampson.

In the third set, Hastings began strong with kills by Mikah O'Neill, pushing their early lead to 2-0. Northwestern responded with a series of successful plays, including a kill by Jazlin Douma and a block by Savonne Sterk, to tie the game at 3. The Red Raiders then took control midway through the set, with Alysen Dexter contributing multiple kills and a key service ace by Liv Reitsma, extending their lead to 19-15. Despite a late rally by Hastings, which included a service ace from Dacey Sealey and a tie at 19, Northwestern secured the set victory at 25-21 with a final kill by Jazlin Douma. Logan Miller surpassed 1,000 career assists during the match, adding to the team's success.

Head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch reflected on Northwestern's victory over the Broncos, emphasizing the team's consistent performance throughout the match. "I thought throughout the whole night we did a good job of getting about a three or four point lead," he noted, highlighting their ability to maintain this advantage. Van Den Bosch also praised the offensive balance, stating, "I thought all of our hitters had great swings and good opportunities." This strategic approach proved effective in securing the win at the Bultman Center in Orange City, Iowa, during the GPAC semifinals.
