Raiders Tame Mustangs at Home

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Raiders cruised to a four-set victory on Wednesday night in front of the home crowd.

NWC 3, MSIDE 1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-16, 25-22)
How It Happened
The Raiders jumped out to an early 9-3 lead, on the back of a ferocious offensive attack. Morningside tried to mount a rally, but a Jazlin Douma kill stretched the lead to 20-11. Following a Morningside service error, Northwestern scored the final three points capped off with an ace by Jori Hajek to win the first set 25-14.

The two sides traded points to open the second set. The Raiders were able to scratch together a three point rally, but the Mustangs were prepared with a rally of their own to knot the score at eight. Kills by Emma Westphal and Jazlin Douma gave the Raiders a two point lead towards the halfway mark of the set but Morningside strung together five straight points to give themselves a 16-14 lead. Back to back kills by Maddy Sampson and Alysen Dexter tied the score once more, but it was the Mustangs who were victorious in the end, winning the second set 25-19.

The third set was dominated by the home squad, as they raced out to a quick 12-3 lead with a whole host of Raiders getting in on the action. Morningside stemmed the flow before Alysen Dexter scored three of the next four points to push the Raiders to a 16-9 advantage. Another rally from the Mustangs would prove futile, as Douma put the finishing touches on a 25-16 Raider victory in the third set.

Rallies played a factor in the fourth set with both teams finding somewhat of a groove. A Logan Miller service ace made the score 5-1 in favor of the Raiders early in the set, before both teams traded three-point runs. A Zavyr Metzger kill gave Northwestern an advantage once again, followed up by a Douma kill. Morningside found themselves in the lead midway through the set, until a rally capped by the blocking duo of Metzger and Savonne Sterk gave the Raiders the lead back. The final set went down to the wire but Maddy Sampson put the exclamation mark on a Raider victory with a kill to give the home squad the victory 25-22.

Game Notes:
  • Northwestern averaged a .250 hitting percentage.
