Friday Afternoon Win Puts Northwestern atop the GPAC

Yankton, S.D.– The weekend started early for the Red Raiders as they took a trip to take on Mount Marty on Friday afternoon.

It was a stale mate for most of the first half as there was a combined 1 shot on goal. Northwestern kept the ball on Mount Marty's half of the field for most of the first 45 minutes, and the Raider back line only allowed one shot off the Lancers' feet.

In the 22nd minute, there was a breakthrough. After some chaos in the midfield, Drew Darnold found himself all alone on a breakaway to the net off an Alex Ruiz pass. His shot was driven past the keeper and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Raiders lead that carried over to halftime.

After the break, the Lancers started to flip the script. There was plenty of pressure on the Raiders' defensive side. However, this was no match for the Northwestern back line. Once the game was over, there were only three shots on goal and all three of those shots were saved by Rick Lammerts

Northwestern had some opportunities on the net but were unable to convert. The Raiders did not allow a goal in all 90 minutes to achieve a 1-0 victory and their second straight shutout.

With the afternoon victory, the Raiders now have 13 points in the standings which puts them in first place in the GPAC standings, two points ahead of Dordt and Hastings in second place. Northwestern holds a 5-3-4 overall record and 4-1-1 in the GPAC.

GAME NOTES

  • Rick Lammers is now second in save percentage for the GPAC with a .778 mark.
