Raiders Come Out on Top in Battle of GPAC Contenders

Carlson nets season-high 24 points with four threes

ORANGE CITY, Iowa. –Dillon Carlson scored 24 points on only eight shot attempts to lead the Northwestern Raiders (17-4. 10-3 GPAC) over the conference leading Hastings Broncos (14-5, 9-2).

"Our guys really battled today," said head coach Kris Korver. "We know that Hastings is a very tough team, but we took it one play at a time, stuck with the game plan, and were tough together."

Carlson opened up the scoring for the game, hitting a mid-range jumper on the Raiders first possession. A few possessions later, he hit a three-pointer, extending the early lead to 7-0. The top-tier GPAC teams would trade baskets for the next several minutes, with a Hastings three-pointer at the 6:00 mark cutting the Raiders lead to four points at 28-24. The Raiders responded with an 8-0 run, punctuated by a pair of tough Carlson three-pointers to seize their first double-digit lead of the game. The remainder of the half was back-and-forth, with a last-second Hastings jumper taking us to the halftime break at 41-33, with Carlson's 14 points leading the Raiders.

The conference-leading Broncos came out of the break ready to play, going on a 7-0 run to start the half, cutting the lead to a single point at 41-40. Northwestern went on a run of its own, scoring 11 of the next 12, highlighted by a layup by Zach LaFave on a circus pass from Craig Sterk. Sterk then got on the highlight reel again with a transition dunk stretching the Raider lead to 67-54.  The lead would not dip below seven points the rest of the half, and the Raiders held off the Bronco attempts at a comeback by going 14-for-16 from the free throw line in the second  half. After it was all said and done, Northwestern came out with a 79-71 win with senior Dillon Carlson's 24 points leading the team.
