Northwestern Falls in Top-25 Clash

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In their first top-25 meeting of the year, No. 14 Northwestern (14-4, 7-3 GPAC) dropped tonight's GPAC road contest to No. 20 Morningside (12-4, 7-2 GPAC), falling 78-64.

"I thought our guys really competed in the first half," said head coach Kris Korver. "Going 0-10 from three and 4-10 from the foul line in the second can deflate your team. Morningside's a good ball club, but we didn't execute the way we needed to offensively."

The first half saw the lead change hands three times, with Northwestern opening the contest on a 6-2 run with back-to-back threes for Dillon Carlson and Kaleb Booth. Morningside took their first lead of the night at 12-10 with just over five minutes played, and after a Conner Geddes triple made it 19-19 with 11 minutes on the clock, the Mustangs held a slim advantage for the rest of the half. Craig Sterk buried a three with 1:10 to go in what would be the final basket of the half, making the score 38-37.

In close contests, Northwestern has often this season built up a lead early in the second half. Alex Van Kalsbeek scored with 16:35 to play as an 8-3 run put the Raiders ahead 45-43, but Morningside kept it tight, with the game tied 48-48 at 14:48. The Mustangs put together a 16-2 run over the next five minutes before going ahead by as many as 19 points in the late stages of the half en route to a 78-64 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Alex Van Kalsbeek scored a team-high 18 points, also adding eight boards.
