Late Goal Propels Northwestern to Win in Home Opener

Julie Dunlap moves into sole possession of second-place all-time in program history in goals scored

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – A perfect night for the Red Raider home opener at the NWC Soccer Complex saw the Northwestern College women's soccer team (1-2, 0-0 GPAC) pick up the first win in the Kelli Herman era to kickoff the 2023 Pizza Ranch Classic, downing Central Baptist College (Ark.) (2-2-1, 0-0 AMC) 1-0.
Northwestern controlled the ball the entire match in the first game of the season in front of the home crowd at the NWC Soccer Complex. It was a balanced attack from the Red Raiders all match, as Northwestern put up equal amounts of shots in each half.

"Tonight was a game of patience and taking ownership of our controllables. We didn't do that in Montana. Our goal tonight was to play 90 minutes without conceding a goal," noted Herman. "I was super pleased with their commitment, effort, and attitude towards tat goal. It feels pretty special to have your first home game under the lights and to get a win."

The Red Raiders and Mustangs battled in the first half with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. Northwestern held the advantage with 14 shots in the first half to CBC's three.

Heading into the final 10 minutes of play still knotted up at 0-0, senior Julie Dunlap (Des Moines, Iowa) would break the deadlock and put Northwestern ahead with her second goal of the season and would be the lift Northwestern needed to get into the win column for the first time in 2023.

The Red Raider backline would hold Central Baptist to just one shot in the entire second half. The Raiders themselves would muster another 13, brining their match total to 27 in the victory.

MATCH NOTES:
  • Julie Dunlap tallies her 31st career goal; moving into sole possession of second-place all-time in program history.
  • Head coach Kelli Herman picks up her first win leading the Red Raider women's soccer program.

  • Dunlap (9), Aliza Edwards (3), and Grace Timm (3) all set new career-highs in shots tonight.
