Raiders Battle in the First Half, but Drops Match to Providence

Northwestern nets two goals in the first game of the Kelli Herman era

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Kelli Herman era began today as the Northwestern College women's soccer team (0-1, 0-0 GPAC) battled in the first half, but fell to the University of Providence Argos (Mont.) (1-1, 0-0 CCC) 4-2 in the first match of the 2023 season, despite a pair of first half goals.

Though Providence put up more shots in the first half, it was the Red Raiders who made the most of their opportunities, finding the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. Northwestern struck first as freshman Aliza Edwards (Spencer, Iowa) netted the first goal of the season and of her career in the 22nd minute.

Just before the half, a battle in the box would put veteran midfielder Julie Dunlap (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa) up for a penalty kick, in which she would convert giving Northwestern the 2-0 lead at the half in Great Falls.

The Red Raiders had four corner kick opportunities in the first half and put five shots on goal.

The Argos responded with a goal to cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute as Malan Flygare found the back of the net. Three minutes later, Providence would net the equalizer as the two teams battled in a 2-2 tie.

Providence would pick up their third goal of the half in their furious second half comeback in the 75th minute, taking the 3-2 lead on their home pitch. An insurance goal that would seal the match came in the 81st minute for the Argos.
