Kaltenberger, van den Beld Score in Season-Opening Win

Northwestern winners of six of last seven season openers

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.  – On an unseasonably warm night on the pitch, the Northwestern men's soccer team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) picked up a win in its first match of the year, a 2-0 decision on the road at Roosevelt (Ill.) (0-1-1, 0-0 CCAC).

In the first meeting between the two programs, it was the defense that was on display early on. Shots were limited through the opening 20 minutes and it was the result of a penalty kick that the first goal was put on the board. After being dragged down in a fight for the ball, Tim Kaltenberger (Jr., Cologne, Germany) set up atop the box and sent the ball to the right side of the net, giving his team a 1-0 lead, the only goal of the first 45 minutes.

The Raiders doubled their lead at the 63-minute mark as Stan van den Beld (Jr., Voorhout, Netherlands) deked a Laker defender and found the back of the net for his 11th-career goal. 10 minutes later, Northwestern kept pressure on as van den Beld delivered a corner kick and Riley Aarbo (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) hit one off the post for a near score. The 2-0 score would hold the rest of the way, helping the Raiders move to 1-0 to start the year.
