Raiders Split Opening Weekend Road Trip

van den Beld scores second goal of season

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill.  – Trinity Christian (Ill.) (2-0-1, 0-0 CCAC) remained unbeaten with a win over the Red Raider men's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0 GPAC) today, as Northwestern split their opening weekend in the Chicago metro.

Three goals were scored in the first half, as the Trolls jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in the span of seven minutes by David Hernandez and Ismael Aguero, respectively.

Northwestern cut their deficit in half at the 37-minute mark as Stan van den Beld (Jr., Voorhout, Netherlands) scored his second goal of the year and eighth of his career.

The Raiders were on the attack throughout the second half to try and tie the match, taking seven shots to Trinity Christian's four, but their Ivan Perez drew a foul that led to a penalty-kick goal, putting the Trolls ahead by two goals with ten minutes to play.

  • Northwestern still leads the all-time series with Trinity Christian, 5-2.
  • van den Beld is tied for the conference lead in goals scored (2) through the opening weekend.
  • The Raiders held a shot advantage at 14-9.
  • Pablo Aspas (Sr., Valencia, Spain) collected three saves in goal.
Up Next: The Raiders will play at the NWC Soccer Complex for the first time next week, hosting Central Baptist (Ark.) as part of the Pizza Ranch Classic. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1.
