Dylan Kirkeby Dominant in Game One Win at Hastings

Eli Rash records 100th career hit in Game 1

HASTINGS, Neb. – Despite windy conditions, it was nevertheless a beautiful day for some Good Friday baseball, as the Northwestern College baseball team (15-20, 8-8 GPAC) would split with the Broncos of Hastings College (11-21, 5-7 GPAC) at Duncan Field. Northwestern would take Game 1 with a dominant no-hit, five inning performance from Dylan Kirkeby.

GAME 1: Northwestern 3, Hastings 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Dylan Kirkeby (4-1)
Loss: Alec Fichter (1-1)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (8)

How It Happened
Red Raider starter Dylan Kirkeby (Jr., Brandon, S.D.) would tally four strikeouts as the would go five innings to pick up his third-straight win on the mound, as the three-run third inning by the Northwestern offense proved to be enough, as the Red Raiders star the day with a 3-2 win.

Northwestern opened up the first game of the day with a pair of singles in the first inning, but were unable to bring across a run in the opening frame. Kirkeby picked up his first strikeout of the day, stranding a Bronco in scoring position in the bottom half of the frame.

A lead-off walk worked by Isaac Short (Fr., Grimes, Iowa) and a stolen base from Bryce Click (Fr., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) would put a runner in scoring position with no one out to start the third inning, which would prompt a Hastings pitching change. Ethan Buckner (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) would drive in the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle. Back-to-back RBI singles to left field from Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) and Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.), giving Northwestern a 3-0 lead through two and a half innings of play.

Hastings would plate their first run of the game in the fifth on an RBI ground out, making it 3-1 Northwestern through five, yet without allowing a hit.

To begin the sixth inning, junior Eli Rash (Jr., Lake Lotawana, Mo.) notched his 100th career hit with a single to left field. Northwestern would then take advantage of a pair of Bronco miscues to put runners at first and second with nobody away. However, the Raiders would strand the runners there as they could not add to their 3-1 lead.

The Broncos, after a throwing error, Matt Lucero attempted to score on the mishap but Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) would gun down the second Bronco run at the plate to preserve the lead. Later in the inning, an RBI single would bring in the second Bronco run, as Northwestern's lead would be cut to one at 3-2 through six full innings of play.

Trailing by a run heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos started the inning with a single up the middle. Ryan Reynolds (Sr., Yorkville, Ill.) would tally the first out with a strikeout. Reynolds would tally his league-leading eighth save of the season, as he would induce a ground ball double play to end the game.

GAME 2: Hastings 6, Northwestern 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Cole Peterson (1-2)
Loss: Drew Dykstra (2-4)
Save: None

How It Happened
The second game of the afternoon was decided by just two half innings that put runs on the board, but it was Hastings taking advantage of a six-run fourth inning to prevail 6-2 to split the season series.

The Broncos threatened early in Game 2, having runners on first and third with two away. Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) was able to work out a ground ball to third to keep the game scoreless through one. Both starters would then settle into a groove until the fourth inning.

Hastings would strike first with a two-run home run to left field. The Broncos would then load the bases and a bases clearing triple into the right field corner to jump out to the 5-0 lead. Before the fourth inning would end, Hastings would tack on another run to extend their lead to 6-0.

The next half inning, the Raiders would cut into that deficit as an RBI ground out from Buckner and an RBI triple from Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) would get two of those runs back, making it 6-2 Broncos.

In their final at-bat, Hastings would once again load the bases with just one out in the eighth inning. After a pitching change, Brady Nicolet (Sr., Grimes, Iowa) would enter and get the Bronco hitter to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Game Notes
  • In a flip of the script, it was Hastings outhitting the Raiders, 11-5, in Game 2.
  • Jacob Kindhart and Ethan Bucker both drove in a run each.
  • Kip Cullinan recorded a double, Kindhart a triple.
  • Turning another double play in Game 2, the Raiders have now turned 18 on the season.
  • For the 11th time this season, NWC played errorless baseball.
  • Drew Dykstra (2-4) made his eighth start of the season, going 3.2 innings for the Raiders.
  • Making his eighth appearance of the season, Brad Tornow would be called upon from the bullpen in relief and would toss 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.
  • Colton Korver would pitch 0.1 innings in his ninth appearance of the campaign.
  • Aidan Sieperda would get the next chunk of innings, going 1.1 innings.
  • Brady Nicolet would get the final two outs of the eighth inning.
