Red Raiders Battle Mother Nature; Sweeps Mount Marty at Home

Raider pitching staff combines for 26 strikeouts and allowed just 10 hits in the sweep

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The pair of lightning delays prior to first pitch of tonight's Great Plain Athletic Conference (GPAC) proved to benefit the Northwestern College baseball team (17-20, 10-8 GPAC) as they swept the Mount Marty Lancers (29-10, 12-6 GPAC) who sat tied for the lead in the conference entering the day, behind a 4-for-4 and 3 RBI day at the plate for Mason Porepp in Game 1 and a stellar seven-inning pitching clinic from Brady Roberts in Game 2.

GAME 1: Northwestern 5, Mount Marty 4

Pitching Decisions
Win: Brett Shelton (4-4)
Loss: Noah McCandless (2-1)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (9)

How It Happened
In a tightly contested one-run game, the opening game of the day proved to be a solid GPAC baseball clash with a pair of aces on the bump for Mount Marty and Northwestern. The Raiders would use a two-run sixth inning trailing by one entering the frame, to pull out the 5-4 victory.

Mount Marty would strike for two runs immediately, thanks to back-to-back hits to start the game (single, double). The two runs would come in to score on an RBI ground out and a passed ball, jumping out to the 2-0 lead through the first half inning of play.

It would not take long at all for the Red Raiders to pull even, and to take their first lead. A Lancer wild pitch would plate Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) to cut the lead in half after he started the inning with a single. Later in the frame, Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would drive a ball to right field and plate two runs to give NWC the 3-2 lead through one full inning.

The Lancers would draw even in the top half of the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice, as the Raiders traded an out for a run but would limit the damage there. The two starters would settle in as the two teams would go scoreless in the third and fourth innings.

In the fifth, a Bodi Waller home run to left center would give Mount Marty the 4-3 lead late in the seven-inning contest. Northwestern would get the tying run to second twice in the bottom half but would be unable to push it across.

After a scoreless top half of the sixth, it would be the Red Raiders who would get the bats working. A pinch hit single for Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) would get the tying run aboard with one away. A single and an MMU error later, the bases would be loaded for Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.). Entering the game with already a team-high 11 hit-by-pitch, Vogel would wear his 12th of the season and would drive in the tying run making it 4-4. Porepp would then single, picking up his third RBI of the day, giving NWC the 5-4 advantage heading to the final frame.

Head coach Brian Wede would call upon his trusted closer Ryan Reynolds (Sr., Yorkville, Ill.) who would pick up his ninth save of the season, picking up a pair of punch outs as the Red Raiders prevail 5-4.

Game Notes
  • A perfect 4-for-4 day for Mason Porepp with four singles and three RBI.
  • Northwestern improves to 5-7 in one run games on the season.
  • It marks the 11th multi-hit game for Porepp (first four-hit game), and his seventh multi-RBI game (first 3-RBI day).
  • Noa Vogel records the other RBI of the game, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
  • Sam Stanford also records two hits (2-for-4) with a run scored.
  • Brett Shelton (4-4) was solid in his 6.0 innings pitched, scattering six hits and four runs (three earned).
  • He struck out a season-high nine batters and issued three walks.
  • Ryan Reynolds picked up his ninth save in Game 1, throwing the final inning and striking out two.

GAME 2: Northwestern 6, Mount Marty 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Brady Roberts (3-5)
Loss: Clayton Chipchase (3-3)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (10)

How It Happened
Like Game 1, it would be the Lancers who would score first in the first inning and, yet again, the Raiders would respond with a run of their own. Mount Marty plated their first run of the game on a passed ball, marking an unearned run. In the bottom half, continuing to swing his hot bat, Porepp drives in Olesen for his fourth RBI of the day to tie the game up at 1-1.

Quiet on all fronts until the fourth inning, it would be the Red Raiders who plate a pair of runs to jump out to the 3-1 lead. Started with a Lancer error that allowed all runners to advance an extra base, as Colby Shelton (INFO) would come into score. Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would pick up an RBI single to plate the second run of the frame.

NWC would put two more runs up on the board in the fifth, again given a run on a Lancer defensive miscue and an RBI single, this time from Kindhart.

A solo home run in the seventh inning would cut Northwestern's lead to 5-2, but they would get that run back in the eighth as an RBI single from Stanford scored TJ Silliman (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) as the Raiders made it 6-2.

After Brady Roberts (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) threw his best game of the season – notching season-highs in innings pitched (7.0), strikeouts (11), no walks, and just three hits – Wede would once again call on Reynolds to close the door on the Lancers. He would record the final six outs and pick up his 10th save of the year – second of the day – to continue to lead the GPAC in the category.

Game Notes
  • Ryan Reynolds picks up his league-leading 10th save of the season – second of the day – and moves into third all-time in program history for saves in a career (16).
  • Sam Stanford increases his on-base streak to 17-straight games (2-for-4, RBI, walk).
  • NWC improves to 5-3 in night games (5pm start or later) on the year and 9-6 on the season when scoring in the first inning.
  • The Raiders record 13 hits for the third time this season, the mark sitting second-best.
  • Northwestern pitching held the Lancer bats to just four hits and one earned run.
  • Four Red Raiders notch two hits in the Game 2 victory (indicates multi-hit games on the season): Sam Stanford (11), Kip Cullinan (12), Noa Vogel (7), Drew Dykstra (1).
  • Stanford, Mason Porepp, Jacob Kindhart, Dykstra all drive in a run in the win.
  • Evan Olesen and Dykstra both had one stolen base.
  • With his five hits in the two games combined, Porepp now needs just three hits for 100 career hits.
  • Recording his best start of the season to date, Brady Roberts (3-5) went seven strong innings, surrendering just three hits.
  • He tied his career-high with 11 strikeouts and did not issue a walk (one HBP), giving up two runs (one earned).
  • It marks the fourth time in his Red Raider career he has punched out 11 batters in a start.
  • Reynolds also becomes the first Red Raider to record 10+ saves in a season since Eddie Pantzlaff (2012, 11 saves).
