Baseball Drops Two Games to Morningside to Wrap Up Home Stand

Brett Shelton records 200 career innings in Game 1

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (14-19, 7-7 GPAC) concluded their seven-game home stand with a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) doubleheader, dropping both contests to the Morningside Mustangs (23-8, 9-3 GPAC) on Thursday afternoon. Senior right-hander Brett Shelton would record his 200th career inning in a Northwestern uniform in his Game 1 start.

How It Happened
Morningside used three multi-run innings to down the Red Raiders 10-2 to open the day. The Mustangs used back-to-back RBI singles in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead early in the afternoon.
 
Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) would reach on a fielder's choice in the bottom half of the first, and heads up base running from Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) had him come into score, catching the Mustang defense off guard, making it 2-1 through the first inning of play.
 
Through four and a half innings, Morningside would go on to plate five more runs after their two in the first inning, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage.
 
The final Northwestern run came in the fifth as TJ Silliman (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) would come into score on an errant throw from the Morningside third baseman attempting to turn a double play. A couple more Mustang runs in the sixth would make it 10-2.
 
Game Notes
  • Brett Shelton becomes the 14th Red Raider pitcher in program history to record 200+ innings in their career.
  • NWC could only muster three hits in the game to Morningside's 14.
  • The Raiders worked five walks, as Kip Cullinan recorded two.
  • Sam Stanford saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end.
  • Shelton (3-4) would throw 5.1 innings in his eighth start of the season.
  • Freshman Jakeb Swallow made his eighth appearance of the season in relief, finishing the sixth inning – throwing 0.2 innings.
  • Brady Nicolet pitched the seventh inning, his 10th appearance of the season, recording one strike out in the three batters he faced.

How It Happened
The Mustang bats stayed hot in Game 2, putting up 12 more hits and notching three home runs to take the doubleheader sweep.
 
In the third inning, Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would cut the Morningside lead down to 3-2 with a 2-RBI double to deep dead center field. It would be all the runs the Red Raiders could muster in Game 2 against the Morningside starter who threw a complete game.
 
Morningside would plate six more runs to take Game 2 by the score of 9-2 and sweeping the doubleheader.
 
Game Notes
  • Mason Porepp went 1-for-3 with his 2-RBI double in the third inning, notching his sixth multi-RBI game of the season.
  • The Mustangs once again out hit the Raiders, 12-5, in Game 2.
  • Sam Stanford saw his on-base streak extend to 13-straight games in the doubleheader.
  • Jacob Kindhart recorded his second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-2 on the game.
  • Eli Rash and Mo Watson both worked walks in the second game of the day.
  • Brady Roberts (2-5) went six full innings on the mound in his eighth start of the campaign, striking out four Mustang hitters.
  • Shane Geurink made his 14th appearance out of the bullpen, throwing the seventh inning.
Up Next: Northwestern concludes the busy week of baseball, the stretch of seven games in five days, tomorrow, April 7 with a trip to Hastings, Neb. to battle the Hastings Broncos (10-20, 4-6 GPAC) in a GPAC doubleheader prior to Easter Break.
