ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (13-17, 7-4 GPAC) once again split the doubleheader with the (RV) Concordia University (Neb.) GAME 1: Northwestern 5, (RV) Concordia 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Dylan Kirkeby (3-1)
Loss: Kellen Ingram (1-1)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (7)

How It Happened
Northwestern picked up their second win of the series against the (RV) Concordia Bulldogs with a 5-2 win in Game 3 of the series, behind a dominant six inning performance from starter Dylan Kirkeby (Jr., Brandon, S.D.). The only Bulldog runs coming on a pair of solo home runs on the game.

Despite leaving the bases loaded in each of their first two at-bats, the Red Raiders jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead through three innings. Northwestern struck first for the first time in the series in the home half of the first inning. After a 2-2 double to left center field from Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) and back-to-back walks to load the bases, Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) delivered the first run of the day with an RBI single to left field.

In the top half of the second inning, with the tying run on second base, freshman catcher Isaac Short (Grimes, Iowa) would throw out Alec Blakestad trying to swipe third to keep NWC with the 1-0 lead. The following half inning, Cullinan would drive in Bryce Click (Fr., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) on a fielder's choice. With the bases for the second-straight inning, it would be Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) who would drive in another run with an RBI single through the left side, increasing the Raider lead up to 3-0.

In the third inning, the Red Raiders would plate another run thanks to a TJ Silliman (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) pinch hit RBI single down the left field line, scoring Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) who began the inning with a walk.

Concordia would plate their first run in the top half of the fourth with a solo home run (4-1 NWC). With a pair of outs in the bottom half, Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) would miss his third home run of the season by mere inches as his ball would bounce off the top of the wall in left center field.

The final Northwestern run would come in the fifth inning, as Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would belt his first home run of his Red Raider career in a pinch hit plate appearance.

Concordia would plate the final run of the day with their second solo shot of the day. Ryan Reynolds (Sr., Yorkville, Ill.) would pick up his league-leading seventh save of the season, pitching the seventh inning and surrendering just one walk. He would work a game-ending double play as NWC won 5-2.

  • The two teams combined for three home runs in the first game of the day.

Loss: Drew Dykstra (2-3)

How It Happened
The Bulldogs put the first tally on the board in the third inning, the first time in the series that neither team plated a run in the first inning. Utilizing a sacrifice fly, Concordia took the 1-0. Despite getting into some trouble later in the frame, Raider starter Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) worked out of the bases loaded jam, preserving the 1-0 game.

Concordia plated their second run of the day to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, prompting a Northwestern pitching change. The Bulldogs would end up putting up seven runs in the fourth inning, grabbing an 8-0 lead.

Northwestern put some pressure on the Bulldog starter in the home half of the fourth after a single and a walk, but would be unable to plate a run.

With two down in the sixth, the Red Raiders would tally back-to-back hits from Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) but would leave them stranded, heading to the seventh inning trailing 10-0. Northwestern would plate their lone run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as Silliman would come in to score on a throwing error by the Bulldog shortstop.

Game Notes
  • Sam Stanford recorded his eighth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with two singles.
  • Stanford finishes the Concordia series on a 10-game hitting streak.
  • Evan Olesen and Noa Vogel were the only other two Raiders to record a hit in the series finale.
