Northwestern Opens Final Regular Season Series at Dordt

Brady Roberts recorded new career-high of 13 strikeouts in his final regular season start

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The two Sioux County rivals met at Open Space Park to open a four-game set to open the final weekend of the regular season, the Northwestern College baseball team (19-27, 12-14 GPAC) dropped the first two games of the four-game set to the Defenders of Dordt (18-26, 6-20 GPAC).

GAME 1: Dordt 6, Northwestern 4

Pitching Decisions
Win: Diego Benitez (2-3)
Loss: Brett Shelton (4-6)
Save: Chaz Gothard (3)

How It Happened
Three first-inning runs proved to be not enough in the first game of the series, as the Defenders would take Game 1 scoring six runs in the first three innings to down the Raiders.

Five batters came to the plate to start the contest before an out was recorded, with four-straight hits to start the contest. In the early hit party, Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) led off with a double followed by a double from Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa). Cullinan, Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.), and Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) all pick up RBIs in the frame, as the Raiders led 3-0 after the top half of the first.

Dordt got one run back in the home half of the frame and would go onto leave the bases loaded as Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would make a nice catch running in on a shallow fly ball to center to end the Defender threat.

The Defenders would threatened with runners on second and third with one out in the second inning. Nolan Christianson would sneak a ball right inside the first base bag to tie the game at 3-3. Dordt would take their first lead on a Raider defensive miscue, leading 4-3 after two full.

Continuing the theme of putting at least one run in each inning, Dordt extended their lead 6-3 on a two-run home run.

Though the bats had gone silent for the Red Raiders for a couple of frames, an opportunity presented itself in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded with one down. The first run of the inning came into score when Dykstra was hit with a pitch on a 3-2 count, but a double play would get Dordt out of the jam still leading, 6-4.

Northwestern threatened again in the sixth inning. After a Dykstra stolen base, the Red Raiders had runners on second and third with two outs but would be unable to cut into the deficit. Dordt would go on to take the contest by the 6-4 margin.

Game Notes
  • Evan Olesen was a perfect 4-for-4 with four singles and a run scored in Game 1.
  • It marks his second four-hit game and 12th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Colby Shelton was 2-for-3 on the game, while Noa Vogel was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Northwestern tallied three extra base hits in the game, all doubles from Sam Stanford, Kip Cullinan, and C. Shelton.
  • Drew Dykstra recorded his fifth stolen base of the season, now a perfect 5-for-5 on the year.
  • Dykstra and Mason Porepp both reached via hit-by-pitch in the contest.
  • Brett Shelton (4-6) made his 11th start of the season, throwing 3.0 innings and tallying two strikeouts.
  • Brad Tornow made his 11th appearance of the season, throwing the final 3.0 innings.
  • He surrendered just two hits and had two punch outs on the outing.

GAME 2: Dordt 6, Northwestern 3

Pitching Decisions
Win: Mike Bruell (1-1)
Loss: Brady Roberts (3-6)
Save: Chaz Gothard (4)

How It Happened
Game 2 saw a pitcher's duel for the first half of the game, as all nine combined runs were put on the board in the fifth inning or later. A Dordt three-run home run in the seventh proved to be the difference as the Defenders would go onto sweep the day with a 6-3 Game 2 victory.

Scoreless through the first four frames, Northwestern would break the scoreless tie with a solo home run from Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) in the fifth, as NWC took the 1-0 lead.

A pair of RBI singles in the sixth and seventh from Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) and Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.), respectively, would be the extent of Red Raider scoring, taking a 3-0 lead to the home half of the seventh.

In the bottom half of the seventh, a sacrifice fly for the Defenders would cut the NWC lead down to 3-1. A pair of runners would be on the base paths for Logan Harris later in the inning, as he would go deep to left field to give Dordt the lead, 4-3, and they would not surrender that advantage.

The Defenders would plate two more runs in the eighth as insurance on a double to center field, extending their lead to 6-3 which would prove to be the final tally.

Game Notes
  • Jacob Kindhart hit his first home run of the season and his second of his career in the fifth inning.
  • Brady Roberts marked a new-career high with 13 strikeouts, topping his previous high of 11.
  • Eight different Raiders recorded a hit, as none tallied multiple hits.
  • Kip Cullinan and Noa Vogel both recorded doubles for their hit.
  • Mason Porepp stole his 11th bag of the season (11-for-15).
  • Sam Stanford, Colby Shelton, and Kindhart all drove in one run apiece.
  • Roberts (3-6) made his 11th start of the year, going seven full innings.
  • He scattered five hits and surrendered four runs (all earned).
  • Senior Brady Nicolet pitched the eighth inning, making his 14th appearance of the year, allowing one hit and two runs (one earned), recording two strikeouts.
Up Next: Northwestern will compete the four-game set with the Defenders tomorrow afternoon (April 29) to wrap up the regular season. First pitch for Game 3 is set for 1:00 p.m. from Sioux Center.
