Raiders Fall Twice at Dordt to Conclude Regular Season

Northwestern to compete in the GPAC tournament next week

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (19-27, 12-14 GPAC) concluded the regular season slate today with another doubleheader at rival Dordt at Open Space Park, falling twice heading into the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament.

GAME 1: Dordt 2, Northwestern 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Jae Kim (7-3)
Loss: Dylan Kirkeby (4-3)
Save: None

How It Happened
A low-scoring affair in Game 3 of the series in Sioux Center to start Saturday afternoon, as it was the Defenders taking the 2-0 win and winning the first three games of the series.

A first inning run for the Defenders proved to be the difference, as a Carrig RBI double into right field would plate what was the game-winning run. An RBI ground out in the sixth inning plated the Defender insurance run.

Throwing their ace to start Day 2, Dordt's Jae Kim would keep the Northwestern bats at bay all day long. The Red Raiders were unable to put more than one runner on in any inning against Kim.

Game Notes
  • The offense scattered three hits today from Sam Stanford, Evan Olesen, and Ethan Buckner.
  • Both team's struck out nine times at the plate today in the low-scoring affair.
  • Dylan Kirkeby (4-3) threw four solid innings of five hit ball, punching out nine Defenders and allowing one run.
  • Shane Geurink made his 17th appearance of the season, tossing the final two frames and allowing just one run (earned) and one hit.
GAME 2: Dordt 10, Northwestern 4

Pitching Decisions
Win: Nick Yeager (5-5)
Loss: Drew Dykstra (3-5)
Save: None

How It Happened
Despite out-hitting the Defenders in the final game of the series, errors plagued the Red Raiders as the Defenders would complete the series sweep with a 10-4 win in Game 4.

Dordt utilized the long ball in the first inning to jump out to another early 1-0 lead in the first. Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) would drive in the tying run in the fourth inning with an RBI fielder's choice. However, Dordt would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 3-1 lead through four full.

Scoring four runs in the fifth and six innings would see Dordt increase their lead up to 8-1, though an RBI ground out from Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) would bring in the second Red Raider run of the day.

The eighth inning would see both teams combine for four runs, as Dordt would go on to win 10-4. Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) drove in a run with a single to center field, while the final run came into score on a Defender defensive miscue.

Game Notes
  • With his walk, Noa Vogel becomes the first Red Raider to notch 25+ walks in a season since Austin Zylstra (2019).
  • NWC recorded four extra base hits, all doubles in Game 4 from Sam Stanford, Evan Olesen, Colby Shelton, Jacob Kindhart.
  • Stanford, Mason Porepp, and Kindhart all recorded two hits in the final game of the series.
  • Porepp and Stanford now sit tied for the team lead in multi-hit games this season with 15.
  • Kindhart records his fourth multi-hit game of the year.
  • Colby Shelton was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, his hit being the double.
  • Noa Vogel recorded two stolen bases, bringing his season total up to six swiped bags on the season.
  • Drew Dykstra (3-5) made his 11th start of the season, going five full innings allowing just the one run (unearned) and seven strike outs.
  • Jakeb Swallow, Aidan Sieperda, and Ryan Reynolds all pitched one inning each in relief.
