NWC Wins Walk-Off Thriller in Game One on Senior Day over Jamestown

Red Raiders end the home slate with a 6-5 record, celebrates 11 seniors on Senior Day

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (18-24, 11-11 GPAC) earned a Senior Day split against the Jamestown Jimmies (23-17, 12-10 GPAC) in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament seeding jostle at the Baseball Diamond, as the Red Raiders walk-off Game 1 in the ninth inning.

"The 2023 senior class is a memorable class. For four of them COVID cut short their sophomore season while seven of them experienced a unique freshmen campaign. These guys have led our team in an admirable fashion and their commitment to each other and to our team is obvious in the hours they've dedicated toward the game," notes head baseball coach Brian Wede. "To this senior class as you prepare to leave Northwestern, as St. Paul says to the Romans in Romans 15:13, 'May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.' Thank you for who you are and what you have done in our program. I love each of you dearly."

How It Happened
In a thrilling Game 1 of the GPAC doubleheader this afternoon on a clear and sunny day in Orange City saw a low-scoring, one-run game that went to the ninth inning, as the Raiders would walk it off with a sacrifice fly and winning 4-3 as no team scored more than one run an inning.

The scoring started in the first, as the Jamestown starter struggled to find the strike zone, the Red Raiders would load the bases. Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) would lead-off the home half with a single and would come into score as Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) works an RBI walk.

The two team's starters would settle into a groove as neither team would score until the fifth inning, as the Raiders held the 1-0 lead through four. At one point, Raider starter Dylan Kirkeby (Jr., Brandon, S.D.) would retire seven-straight Jimmies.

Jamestown would pull even in the fifth, as a grounder back to Kirkeby would be thrown away, allowing the tying run to come across to score. The Jimmies' would get greedy and try to plate a second run on the play, but Isaac Short (Fr., Grimes, Iowa) would recover nicely and get the ball back to Kirkeby covering the plate to keep the game knotted at 1-1.
Northwestern would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to take the lead right back. With two outs and the go-ahead run at second, Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) would double to right field to give NWC the 2-1 advantage.

The sixth inning would also see each team plate a run, as the Red Raiders would take a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning. A Hayden Brown long ball tied things up again for the second time on the day. An RBI single from Short would give NWC the 3-2 advantage.

Once again, the Jimmies would fight back. A game-tying RBI double in the seventh would knot the game up at 3-3. Despite having the winning run on second base with less than two outs in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, it would take nine innings to finally get the winning run across.

The ninth started with Stanford reaching base for the fourth on an UJ error, the rally would begin. With one away, Cullinan would work a walk and put the game-winning run on second base. A single through the left side for Vogel would load the bases, as Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) stepped to the plate. Porepp would be the hero as a sacrifice fly to center field would plate Stanford, who dove in just ahead of the tag, would score the game-winning run.

How It Happened
It was a heartbreaking loss in Game 2 for the Red Raiders, being two outs away from securing the doubleheader sweep before the Jimmies rallied for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to walk away with the 10-5 win and the series split.

Jamestown would strike first in Game 2 with a first inning home run, jumping out to the 1-0 early lead. Northwestern would respond with two runs of their own in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. A wild pitch would score Porepp to tie the game and an RBI ground out from Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) would give NWC their first lead of Game 2.

The Red Raiders would put up three more runs in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run home run from Porepp and an RBI double from Eli Rash (Jr., Lake Lotawana, Mo.) to right center field. Jamestown would get one run back on an RBI double in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-2.
