Mikkelsen homers, Etherington surpasses 100-hit milestone

OMAHA, Neb. – The offense had a field day in Omaha on Friday, scoring 22 runs over two games, as Northwestern (40-3, 15-1 GPAC) swept the College of Saint Mary (5-30, 2-14 GPAC) on the road.

How It Happened
Northwestern took advantage of six College of Saint Mary errors as they defeated the Flames on the road in game one.

Northwestern got on the board right away in the first inning, as Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) singled and advanced home in the next at-bat on a Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) RBI triple. The Raiders kept the line moving, as Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) hit a double with Gallegos on third, as Etherington notched her 100th career hit.

With the Raiders holding a 2-0 lead after the visitors' half of the first, CSM answered with a run of their own, as a two-out RBI double cut the deficit in half.

After two runners reached on errors to start the third, Etherington got her second hit of the day, a single through the left side that scored a run, while another throwing error advanced all runners and made the Northwestern lead grow to 4-1. With Etherington standing on third, a wild pitch brought her home to complete the three-run inning and extend the lead to 5-1.

The Flames got themselves back into the game with one swing of the bat, as a three-run home run made the score 5-4 in the fifth inning.

However, in the next inning, Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) would provide a couple of insurance runs, hitting a two-run home run following a bunt single by Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa).
The Raiders would then put the game away in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits. Grotewold and Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) would each hit RBI singles in the inning.

How It Happened
Scoring the first six runs of the game, the Northwestern Red Raiders completed the series sweep of College of Saint Mary in Omaha on Friday.

The Raiders took advantage of an error to get the scoring started in the first inning after the first two batters reached on a single and a walk. They then added to their lead in the third, scoring two runs on an Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) RBI single and a double from Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.).

After a scoreless fourth, Northwestern took a 6-0 lead in the top of the fifth with Addison Binde (Fr., Scotland, S.D.) hitting a one-out double and later scoring when Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) hit a bases-loaded double to bring in three runs.

CSM began to work their way back into the game, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of errors and a fielder's choice, making the score 6-3.

The Raiders continued to see their lead balloon in the sixth as Ashtyn Billings scored on a wild pitch and Cassidy Gors (Fr., Tea, S.D.) crossed home plate thanks to a sacrifice bunt RBI by Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa).

Northwestern would add on to their lead again in the seventh, scoring four runs, including one on a double by Gors. Although the Flames used a solo home run to start a four-run bottom of the seventh, it was not enough as the Raiders escaped with a 12-8 win.

Game Notes

"Forty wins is a big number and I'm proud of these girls," said head coach Shane Bouman. "It was a good trip to Omaha today!"

Up Next: Northwestern will next face Morningside in a rescheduled doubleheader on Monday, April 24 beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Sioux City.
