Brady Roberts Breaks Career Innings Pitched Record at Doane

Sam Stanford went 6-for-9 with 3 RBI on the day

CRETE, Neb. – The Northwestern College baseball team (18-24, 11-11 GPAC) dropped a pair of games in the state of Nebraska against the (RV) Tigers of Doane University (31-9, 17-5 GPAC) Friday afternoon. Senior Brady Roberts broke the program's all-time career innings pitched mark in his Game 2 start.

GAME 1: Doane 15, Northwestern 4

Pitching Decisions
Win: Aaron Forrest (7-2)
Loss: Brett Shelton (4-5)
Save: None

How It Happened
Northwestern struck for two runs in the first inning as Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) drove in the first run of the game with a single down the right field line. A Tiger error would plate the second run of the frame, giving NWC a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.

It wouldn't take the Tigers long to respond in the home half of the frame, quickly loading the bases. Luke LaChance would give the Tigers the lead with one swing of the bat, clearing the bases with a double to left center field but thrown out trying to make it a triple. It would be enough for the Tigers to go onto win.

Between the third and fifth innings, the Tigers would plate eight runs to take an 11-2 lead. The Red Raiders would plate a pair of runs in the sixth on a Tiger balk and a Sam Stanford RBI single (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.). Doane would plate four more runs in the home half and would take Game 1, 15-4.

Game Notes
  • Returning from injury, Sam Stanford swung a hot bat picking up two hits in Game 1 (2-for-4), including a double and an RBI.
  • On the season it marks 10 multi-hit games, the third Raider to achieve double digit multi-hit games.
  • Kip Cullinan picks up his team-leading 12th multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Colby Shelton had a 2-for-3 game with both of his hits being doubles, marking his third multi-hit game of the season.
  • Brett Shelton (4-5) went 4.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts.
  • Aidan Sieperda and Zach Kinney made their eighth and seventh appearances out of the bullpen, respectively.

GAME 2: Doane 9, Northwestern 8

Pitching Decisions
Win: Kyler Beekman (4-1)
Loss: Ryan Reynolds (0-4)
Save: None

How It Happened
Making his 43rd start, and 53rd appearance, of his Red Raider career, senior Brady Roberts (Urbandale, Iowa) made history with his start at Doane this afternoon. With the first out recorded, he broke the program's all-time career innings mark, previously held by Mike Zoellner (2012 grad) who had 263.2 innings to his name. His five-inning outing brings Roberts to 268.2 innings and counting in a Northwestern uniform.

"I'm really proud of Brady. He's earned all of those innings," noted head coach Brian Wede. "It's been great to know we can plan on him each weekend."

Doane struck first in Game 2 with a pair of runs thanks to a 2-RBI single down the right field line in the second. Northwestern would plate five runs in the next half inning, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. The Raiders would take advantage of Doane miscues, as Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) notched an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.). The Tigers would snag one run back in the home half as NWC lead 5-3 through three full.

After cutting the lead down to one run, Northwestern would strike for a run in the sixth and eighth innings to make it 7-4. Both Raider runs would be driven in thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.).

An RBI single and a two RBI double in the home half of the eighth would draw the Tigers even in the eighth inning. In the top half of the ninth, Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would triple to right center field, scoring Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.), though Porepp himself would be left stranded with NWC leading 8-7.

Northwestern would hold onto the one-run lead heading into the bottom half of the ninth inning, but a pair of solo home runs for the Tigers would lead them to the 9-8 walk-off victory, completing the doubleheader sweep.

Game Notes
  • Brady Roberts set the NWC program record for career innings pitched in his five-inning outing today (now at 268.2 IP).
  • The hot bat continued for Sam Stanford, picking up four more hits (4-for-5) with a pair of RBI.
  • It marks his 11th multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI game on the year.
  • Evan Olesen and Mason Porepp both also go 2-for-4, while Jacob Kindhart was 2-for-3.
  • After both games, the hunt for 50 hits on the season heats up: Stanford & Porepp (47) and Kip Cullinan (44).
  • Roberts tallied five strike outs, needing 17 more to tie the program's career strikeout.
  • Jakeb Swallow went 2.1 innings in his 11th appearance of the campaign.
  • Ryan Reynolds (0-4) pitched the ninth inning, surrendering two earned runs and picking up two strikeouts.
Up Next: Northwestern will celebrate the 2023 senior class in their final home games of the season with a doubleheader against the Jamestown Jimmies (20-16, 9-9 GPAC) on Monday, April 24 at the Baseball Diamond in Orange City.
