How It Happened
Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) pitched six shutout innings and got the complete game win, as the Raiders won Saturday's Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup over Hastings, 6-1 in Sioux Center.

Northwestern struck right away, as an Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) leadoff single followed by aggressive baserunning from Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) allowed Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) to double in the first runs of the game and make the score 2-0. Later in the inning, Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) would add on a run on a groundout, finishing off the three-run opening frame.

After both teams were kept off the board for the next few innings, Cassidy Gors (Fr., Tea, S.D.) would hit a two-RBI single in her first plate appearance of the day, giving the Raiders a 5-0 lead in the fifth.

In the sixth, Strasser would double for the second time, driving Billings home from second with one out.

Despite giving up a home run to lead off the seventh, Kralik struck out two of the final three batters to secure the win.

How It Happened
Northwestern remained resilient despite falling behind early, scoring eight unanswered runs to complete the series sweep in game two of the twin bill.

A two-out double gave Hastings a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, as their pitching and defense held Northwestern in check through the first two frames.

The Raiders would break onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, with Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) singling home Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) to tie the game. Then, with two outs and two runners in scoring position, Emily Strasser hit a double to the fence and brought both runners home to give Northwestern its first lead of the game. In the following at-bat, Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) hit a double of her own to add another run in the inning.

With Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) holding Hastings to just three hits over the next three innings, the Raider offense came alive again in the sixth. Leah Schaefer (Fr., Marshall, Minn.) continued her effectiveness as a pinch hitter, doubling home Cassidy Gors and extending the lead to four. The Raiders would add three more runs in the inning, scoring on an error and another Strasser double to make the score 8-1, a score that would hold to the end.

Game Notes

"Success for us is holding each other to a high standard, and we took pride in today's games," said freshman utility player Kallie Van Kley. "Whatever the circumstance, there will be 15 other girls who have your back – we're each other's biggest fans. Today we showed gratefulness in each opportunity to play the game we love and represent the Red Raiders."

Up Next: Northwestern will continue conference play on Tuesday, hosting the Dordt Defenders at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. in Orange City.
