Pitching Duel, Comeback Win Headline Split With Dordt

Raiders’ 19-game winning streak snapped, NWC responds with 6-2 win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – In a highly-anticipated matchup between two of the top teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), Northwestern (38-3, 13-1 GPAC) split a two-game set with Dordt (28-8, 9-3 GPAC) on Tuesday in Orange City.

GAME 1: DORDT 1, NWC 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Abby Kramer (15-3)
Loss: Kameryn Etherington (16-3)
Save: None

How It Happened
The pitching battle was front and center in the first game of Tuesday's series, as Dordt's Abby Kramer and Northwestern's Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) limited the opposing team's offense throughout.

The first scoring threat of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as Northwestern left two runners in scoring position as Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) hit back-to-back singles, before Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) hit a rocket to right field that was caught for the third out.

Dordt scored the first and only run of the game in the sixth, as Chandler Schemper was hit by a pitch on a full count, bunted over to second, and doubled home by Ella Koster.

Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) would hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, but she was the only baserunner for the Raiders the rest of the way as Dordt escaped in a 1-0 decision.

Game Notes
  • Kameryn Etherington pitched a full seven innings, striking out seven batters on just 61 pitches.
  • Cassidy Gors (Fr., Tea, S.D.) picked up a stolen base as a pinch runner.
  • The loss snapped a 19-game winning streak, the longest such streak since 2000.

GAME 2: NWC 6, DORDT 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Kate Kralik (14-0)
Loss: Alexa Kopaska (3-2)
Save: None

How It Happened
A three-run fifth inning was what Northwestern needed as the Raiders bounced back from their game one loss with a 6-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Northwestern struck first as Gwen Mikkelsen doubled in Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) following an infield single.

Trailing 1-0, Dordt's Karli Olsen dropped down a squeeze bunt that knotted the score, while Ella Koster doubled home a runner in the next at-bat to give the Defenders a 2-1 advantage.

The Raiders would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, when a collision in the outfield allowed Kameryn Etherington to trot around the bases and make the score 2-2.

Northwestern later added insurance runs in the fifth, starting with another Mikkelsen double, accompanied by a two-RBI single from Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.), pushing the lead to 5-2.

Another run came in the sixth as Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) turned a leadoff walk into the sixth run of the game, solidifying the Raider effort.

Game Notes
  • Northwestern picked up its 38th win of the year, tying last year's team for the fifth-most wins in a season in program history.
  • Kate Kralik kept her undefeated record alive in the circle, moving to 14-0.
  • In five innings of work, Kralik struck out three batters and did not give up a run.
  • Gwen Mikkelsen went 2-4 and drove in two runs.
  • Madysn Grotewold reached on two bunt singles, coming around to score both times.
  • Maddie Kvatek singled in two runs.
  • The Raiders are now 20-0 when scoring first and 28-1 when scoring in the first inning.

"We played hard and aggressive both games but things just didn't go our way offensively the first game," commented shortstop Madysn Grotewold. It was good to show our resilience in game two when we bounced back and focused on what we needed to do."

Up Next: The Raiders are set to hit the road this weekend, playing College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday, and facing Morningside in Sioux City on Saturday.
