16 Raiders Finish Top-10 on Day One of Sioux City Relays

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Friday-Saturday meet ended up only being a Friday meet, due to weather canceling day two. The Raiders took advantage of this fact and competed to a plethora of top-10 finishes.

The day would have an early start with the shot put competition, where Bryan Zylstra would lead the Raiders in his 6th place finish, throwing 14.54m or 47' 8.5". He would have his most consistent series ever, eclipsing 14m on each of his throws, and throwing 14.50m three total times. Not to be outdone, William Minnick would be next up in the hammer throw and finish 8th with a throw of 45.75m or 150' 1". That distance would come off first throw. Being confident with his mark he would try to push the next three throws, unfortunately all to foul marks. His fifth throw wold be back to 42m as he connected with the throw.

On the track, the 110m hurdles would start the day for the Raider men. Elijah Weaver would lead the hurdlers in his 6th place finish. He would run the race in 15.96 seconds, the exact time as at the Wayne State Classic. The other hurdle race would see Reese Van Zee finish 10th in the 400m hurdles also running the exact same time of 1:00.84 as he did last week at USD. Next the 100m dash wouldn't fail to disappoint. Grant Palmer would lead in his 6th place finish with a time of 10.89, his best wind-legal mark of his career. Ashton Sanbulte and Reece Wynne racing in a following heat would have their mental fortitude tested when a fellow competitor in their heat would false start, ultimately leading to hesitant starts.

The 200m dash later in the day saw three Raiders in the top 10 for the event. Braden Jahn led the men to a 4th place finish, coming across the line in 21.94. Next would be Braden Kalvelage in 7th with 22.21. The final top-10 would be Palmer again, with next to no wind at his back, coming across in 9th place in 22.36, a massive lifetime PR. Sandbulte would run a collegiate best in the event into a headwind, as would Wynne. Preston Pfaffle would come through with a lifetime best in the event, also into a head wind, beating his time from last week which had a massive tailwind. The last sprint event had Trey Engelmann run a collegiate best 400m dash in 51.67, and have the highest finish for the Raiders in that event with 8th place. Coltin Vargas would also PR in the event, running 57.04. Engelmann would come back to finish 10th in 800m run as well. That run would help to pull Jacob Kalkwarf to a PR run of 2:10.85.

The jumps would not disappoint either. Weaver would come back to finish in 3rd place in the high jump, clearing 1.90m, or 6'2.75". Harland Groves would follow in 4th at 1.85m, Drew Geetings in 5th at 1.80m, with Andrew Frick and Donovan Elmore both clearing 1.70m to tie for 8th place. Noah Lopez would be the final top-10 finish for the men in the triple jump. He would jump his farthest jump of the competition on his second jump, at 11.59m or 38' 0.25".
