Offensive Explosions Keep Raiders Ahead in GPAC

Strasser, Etherington both hit round-trippers in doubleheader

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Emily Strasser and Kameryn Etherington each hit home runs at crucial moments to help Northwestern (35-2, 10-0 GPAC) defeat the Doane Tigers (19-17, 6-8 GPAC) in a weather-affected conference tilt on Friday evening.

How It Happened
A pitcher's duel quickly turned into a dominant win for Northwestern after putting up all of their seven runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a shutout victory in their home opener on Friday afternoon.

Following a two-hour delay due to lightning, softball was underway in Orange City in front of the home crowd. After each team recorded a hit and stranded a runner in the first, all runners were kept off the base paths until the fourth, when Doane put two runners on and the Raiders left a runner on first.

In the sixth, the Northwestern offense came alive, as Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) opened the inning with a walk. Following a bunt single and advance by Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa), the Raiders had two runners in scoring position. Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) then stepped into a pitch and smacked it into left-center to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. With momentum on Northwestern's side, Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) kept the inning going with a double, while Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) hit an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead further. An unearned run then moved the score to 5-0, while Leah Schaefer (Fr., Marshall, Minn.) introduced herself to the home fans with a two-RBI double to cap off the seven-run rally.

Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) completed the shutout after receiving run support, striking out 10 batters in the win.

How It Happened
The Raiders batted around in the third inning to secure the sweep in tonight's doubleheader, an 8-1 win on their home field.

Doane put pressure on the Raiders early, stranding two runners to end the first and one after the second. Northwestern had an effective second inning of work as well, but a pair of two-out singles to load the bases would be it as three were left on base.

The Tigers would be first to score, bringing in a run on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0 in the third.

Northwestern answered with a two-out rally in their half of the third, as Madysn Grotewold turned a one-out walk into a run, tying the game. With Mikkelsen on second, Chloe Gallegos notched her second RBI of the series with a single to give the Raiders their first lead. Kameryn Etherington followed up the RBI with a two-run liner over the left field fence to extend the NWC lead to 4-1. With still two outs on the board, Ellie Jacobson (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa), Charli Bomgaars, and Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) each had RBIs to solidify the Raider advantage at 7-1.

Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) entered in the fourth to pitch, where she was nearly untouchable. The sophomore threw three strikeouts and did not give up a hit in four innings of work, while she also received another run of support to lead to an 8-1 final score.

Game Notes

"We have a tough team that keeps working to get better," said head coach Shane Bouman. "Great wins today and another huge opportunity tomorrow."

Up Next: The Raiders will host the Hastings Broncos tomorrow afternoon at the American State Bank Sports Complex in Sioux Center. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.
