DES MOINES, Iowa – The No. 13-ranked Northwestern College softball team (33-2, 8-0 GPAC) picked up a pair of non-conference wins over (RV) Grand View University (20-11, 6-5 HEART) on a beautiful warm and sunny day in central Iowa, downing the Vikings for the second and third time this season.

How It Happened
Northwestern used the long ball to score four of their five runs to take the Game 1 victory over the (RV) Grand View Vikings.

Both teams struck for a run in the frame. Northwestern plated a run on a Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) RBI single that scored Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa). The Vikings would draw even in the bottom half of the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Gwen Mikkelsen (Sr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) would give the Red Raiders the lead again in the third inning with a three-run home run to left field, making it 4-1.

That score would hold until Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning when she would hit the second home run of the day, also to left field, to make it 5-1 Northwestern.

How It Happened
In a battle between two quality National Association Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) softball teams in Game 2, it would be a tightly contested ballgame but the No. 13-ranked Red Raiders would prevail, 8-6.

Grand View got on the board first in the second game of the doubleheader, plating two runs in the home half of the first.

Northwestern would erupt for a six spot in the third inning on six hits in the frame, highlighted by Etherington's second home run of the day – this time a three-run blast to left field.

Grand View would load the bases in the home half of the third, as a walk would bring in the third Viking run to cut the lead to 6-3. A two-out bases clearing double in the right center gap would tie up the game at 6-6 as head coach Shane Bouman would make the call to the bullpen, calling upon the Game 1 starter Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa). A strike out would end the inning, getting the Northwestern bats back up to the plate.

It wouldn't take the Red Raiders long to get the lead back. The first two runners would reach in the top of the fifth inning, as Mikkelsen would advance them over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Gallegos would then work a walk to load the bases as Etherington would step to the plate. She would drive in the go-ahead run with her own sacrifice fly, giving NWC the 7-6 lead.

A wild pitch in the sixth with two outs would plate an insurance run for Northwestern, giving them an 8-6 advantage heading to the bottom half of the seventh. Entering in relief, Kralik would shut down the Vikings in her 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just two hits and no runs to pick up her second win of the day.

"We came ready to play right away and competed throughout both games," said junior shortstop Madysn Grotewold. "We did a great job moving on and making some big plays defensively. It was an awesome opportunity to play a good team and leave with two wins."

Game Notes
  • Kameryn Etherington went deep again in Game 2, part of her 1-for-2 day with 4 RBI, a walk, and a run scored.
  • Madysn Grotewold would go 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • Gwen Mikkelsen tallied a 1-for-2 day with two RBI.
  • Ellie Jacobson made her eighth start of the season, throwing 2.2 innings.
  • Kate Kralik would come in relief in the third inning and would go 3.2 to improve to 11-0 on the season.
  • Recording the final two outs of the ballgame, Etherington would pick up her second save of the day.
