Second Half Comeback Falls Short in NAIA First Round Contest

Molly Schany records fifth double-double of the season

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (19-12, 14-8 GPAC) couldn't comeback after a hot shooting start from the Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman University (24-9, 13-9 Mid-South) in the First Round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament, falling 74-64 inside the Kehl Center on the campus of Clarke University.

Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) notched her fifth double-double of the season with her game-high 18 points and bringing down 12 rebounds to end the season. She now has 13 double-doubles in her Red Raider career.

Freed-Hardeman got off to a fast start in the First Round contest of the national tournament, shooting 71.4% from the floor in the opening period and knocking down four of their five 3-point attempts. The Lady Lions scored 15 of the first 21 points of the game, jumping out to a 15-6 lead with a little over four minutes left to go in the first quarter. They would continue to knock down shots to take a 24-12 lead into the second quarter.

NWC would battle in the second quarter, but it would be the Lady Lions who continued to knock down shot after shot. Freed-Hardeman would shoot 60.0% from the floor in the first half to hold the 43-23 advantage at the break. It would be Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) and Schany leading the team with eight points each, while Schany also brought down six rebounds.

The Red Raiders would play inspired basketball in the second half, outscoring the Lady Lions 41-31 in the third and fourth quarters, but it proved to be just too much to overcome. NWC would cut into the halftime deficit, trailing by just 11 at the end of the third quarter after putting up 20 points in the frame. The Raiders were propelled by Jones' seven points and Schany's six in the frame.

With eight minutes left in the game, an Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) would cut the FHU lead down to single digits for the first time since it was 17-10 FHU late in the first quarter. The Raiders would ride that momentum and cut the lead down to five points thanks to an old fashioned three-point play and a deep ball from Kylie Foss (Fr., Brandon, S.D.).

Northwestern would cut the lead down to just five points three different times in the final frame, the last time being with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. However, ultimately, Freed-Hardeman would knock down their free throw attempts down the stretch, to take the 74-64 First Round victory.
