How It Happened
It took extra innings, but the Red Raiders picked up their first win over a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) top-25 team since March 8, 2022, defeating No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan (7-2, 0-0 Crossroads) 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth.

The pitchers were in control through the early part of the battle between one-loss squads, as neither team managed to record a hit until the third inning. Northwestern scored first, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the third as a leadoff walk from Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) set up the top of the order. Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) drove Bomgaars home in the next at-bat on an RBI double, before back-to-back productive outs brought Boeve across the plate to give the Raiders a 2-0 advantage.

Indiana Wesleyan responded in their next ups, cutting the deficit in half with a leadoff double and outs that moved the runner home in the following at-bats. The Wildcats tied the game on an error, allowing the runner from third to score.

The Raiders used the bottom of the inning to put up another two runs, as an error kept the inning alive and placed runners at the corners. Following a stolen base from Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa), a ball that went into the outfield allowed Jewel Bergstrom (Fr., Boyden, Iowa) to score and make it 3-2 in favor of Northwestern. Billings came around to score after Bomgaars singled and an error extended the play.

With their chances dwindling, Indiana Wesleyan used the first two batters of the seventh inning to send it to extras. A leadoff single was followed up by a two-run shot that tied the game at 4-4.

In the top of the eighth, the Wildcats advanced their automatic runner to third, while Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) kept the game tied by striking out the second player in the order and forcing a flyout to give the Raiders another chance to win.

Etherington then helped herself out in the bottom of the inning, placing down a bunt that helped Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) score and win the game in extras.

How It Happened
The Red Raiders dropped their second game of the day in walk-off fashion, as Ottawa (Ariz.) (15-8, 0-0 GSAC) used an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to down Northwestern, 6-5.

Northwestern got on the board first in the top of the second as Ellie Jacobson (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa) turned a leadoff single into a run following an RBI groundout by Jennifer Boeve.

The Raiders extended their lead in their half of the third when Chloe Gallegos sent a single into center field that brought Gwen Mikkelsen around from third and pushed the Northwestern lead to 2-0.

Ottawa gained the lead for the first time of the day in the bottom of the third, using a two-run homer and an RBI double to take a 3-2 advantage.

After Ottawa added two additional runs in the fourth to make it 5-2, Northwestern used their sixth-inning offense to tie the game back at 5-5. Mikkelsen singled to center with two runners on to score one and put runners at the corners. In the following at-bat, Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) sent the ball into center, bringing home two runs and tying the game.

Leaving the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Northwestern needed to turn to their defense to try and send the game to extra innings. Ottawa, however, got their leadoff runner on via the walk before a two-out single into right ended the game and gave the Spirit their 15th win of the season.

Game Notes
"It was an intense day of softball between quality teams," said head coach Shane Bouman. "Our ladies showed that they can play with anyone in the country. We are sure proud to be Red Raiders. Back at it tomorrow!"

Up Next: The Raiders only have one game tomorrow as they will face Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) at 10:00 a.m. central time in Tucson, Arizona.
