Baseball Splits with Cornerstone in First Games Down South

Brady Roberts throws five innings of one-hit baseball in Game 2

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Northwestern College baseball team (3-7, 0-0 GPAC) split with the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles (3-8, 0-0 WHAC) on the first day down in Florida at the RussMatt Invitational, picking up their second shut out win of the season in Game 2 of the doubleheader.

GAME 1: Cornerstone 2, Northwestern 1

Pitching Decisions
Win: Josiah Stairs (1-0)
Loss: Ryan Reynolds (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
After leading off the second inning with a walk, Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) would come around to score on a Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) single through the right side, striking first for the third time this season. It proved to be the lone run the Raiders would push across in the contest.

The two teams would remain scoreless until the seventh, and final, frame of the doubleheader contest. A lead-off single for Cornerstone in the bottom of the seventh and a bunt, would allow a single to left center to bring in the game-tying run.

An ensuing walk would put runners at first and second, which would allow the winning run to eventually come across to score on a passed ball and a wild pitch, giving Cornerstone 2-1 victory in walk-off fashion.

Game Notes
  • Game 1 marked the third one-run game the Red Raiders have played this season, dropping to 0-3 in those games.
  • Northwestern picked up five hits to Cornerstone's four.
  • Mason Porepp and Colby Shelton both recorded two hits in the contest.
  • Shelton's RBI single marked his third RBI of the season.
  • Kip Cullinan and Drew Dykstra both walked twice in the contest.
  • Evan Olesen has now reached base safely in five-straight games, after going 1-for-3 with a hit in the contest.
  • With his walks, Dykstra has now made it four-straight games safely reaching base.
  • Brett Shelton threw a strong six innings, allowing just two Cornerstone hits – he recorded three strike outs and walked three batters.

GAME 2: Northwestern 6, Cornerstone 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Brady Roberts (1-2)
Loss: Brody Nelson (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
A pair doubles would result in another early lead for Northwestern, as Vogel opened up the inning with a double followed by a Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) double later in the frame. The favor would be returned in the second game, as the second Red Raider run – Porepp – would come in via a wild pitch to make it 2-0 in the fourth.

It would, once again, be a pitching dual for the next three innings, as both starters would settle in on the bump. Both teams would go down in order in the third and fourth innings, making quick work for the pitchers.

Brady Roberts (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) would not allow the Golden Eagles to pick up their first hit until the fifth inning, as he was dominant against the entire line-up all evening long in his five-inning outing.

Northwestern would add to their lead in the fourth, after taking advantage of free opportunities from Cornerstone. Loading the bases with two away in the frame, back-to-back hit-by-pitches would plate two more Raider runs, extending their lead up to 4-0 through five full innings.

Freshman Aidan Sieperda (Fr. Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) would come in the game to pitch the sixth inning, striking out the first three Gold Eagles he faced.

Adding more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, NWC would take a 6-0 lead to the final frame. Base running perfection led to Bryce Click (Fr., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) swiping home, after entering as a courtesy runner. Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) doubled to left center to drive in the second run of the frame, being the fourth Red Raider to drive in a run in the contest.

Game Notes
  • The win is the second shut out win of the season.
  • It marked the first time this season NWC has gone without recording an error.
  • Northwestern once again outhit the Golden Eagles, 6-1.
  • Mason Porepp tallied his first double of the campaign and his third RBI, while Vogel notched his second double of the season.
  • Kip Cullinan and Sam Stanford picked up RBIs via reaching base by hit-by-pitches.
  • Eli Rash picked up two walks in the contest, making the start at shortstop.
  • Brady Roberts pitched five innings, allowing no runs and just the one hit, while punching out four CU batters.
  • Aidan Sieperda would shut the door on Cornerstone, striking out five batters and walking just one and not allowing a hit in his two innings pitched.
