Kalvelage Jumps to 5th Place; Earns All-American Honors in the Long Jump

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The indoor season came to a close this weekend with the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Five Raider men competed in two events; Braden Kalvelage in the men's long jump, and Braden Jahn, Tanner Schouten, Mitch Oostra, Cody Post as members of the 4x400m relay.

First up was the 4x400m relay on Thursday afternoon. The relay started off with Jahn, leading the race through 350m opening up with his best split ever. Getting the baton next was Schouten who, while receiving it in 3rd place, would make up a spot and sit in second place, right on the tail of the first place runner. Pushing hard through the final few meters of his leg, he would give the baton to Oostra, now in third place, just behind second. Oostra would then go out in blazing speed to sit right behind second place through the 400m distance. Head and shoulders back, straining through the last 50m of his run, he would hand off to Post for the final exchange. Post, now in 3rd place, running 30m behind the leaders, would dig in a push as hard as he could running alone. At the conclusion of the race, it would prove worth it as the relay would run a season best time, and climb up the rankings. They entered in at 16th place, but would end at 12th place.

Second competition for the men was Braden Kalvelage in the long jump on Friday. Coming into the competition in 6th place, Kalvelage would ultimately PR by .05m, to 7.32m or 24' .25", and finish in 5th. His first jump of the competiion would cement his spot in finals with a 7.18m. the next 3 jumps were a 7.00m, 7.16m, and 7.18m, showing his consistency. At that point, sitting solidly in 7th place after 4 jumps, with nothing to lose, Kalvelage decided to get riskey. On his 5th jump, Adjusting his starting mark, Kalvelage pushed hard out of the first couple steps of his runway, and would jump 7.26m, his best of the competition. This jump would raise him one spot to 6th place over all. With one jump left, Kalvelage would do it all again. Jump number 6, out of 6, there was nothing to lose, and everything to gain with one opportunity left. Kalvelage would end leaping to a PR fo 7.32m, and raise his final position to 5th place, earning All-American honors.
