Cullinan Homers Twice in Game One Victory Over (RV) Concordia

Kip Cullinan tallies first 5+ RBI game for the Red Raiders this season in Game 1

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (12-16, 6-4 GPAC) picked up a doubleheader split with the (RV) Concordia Bulldogs (20-10, 6-2 GPAC) in the home opener for the Red Raiders, behind a stellar two home run performance from Kip Cullinan in the 6-5 Game 1 win.

GAME 1: Northwestern 6, (RV) Concordia 5

Pitching Decisions
Win: Brett Shelton (3-3)
Loss: Frankie Cresta (4-3)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (6)

How It Happened
Two swings of the bat from Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) and the Red Raiders had five runs on the board, en route to a 6-5 win over the (RV) Concordia Bulldogs, in a game that saw five home runs between the two teams.

Concordia got on the board first with a long ball in the top of the first inning thanks to a lead-off, first pitch home run from Jayden Adams. Northwestern struck back in the bottom half. After a lead-off single from Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa), Cullinan went deep to center field to give Northwestern the 2-1 lead, a lead they would never surrender. Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) would tally the third hit of the frame, and later, would be driven in on an RBI single from Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa), as the Red Raiders would lead 3-1 after the first full inning of play.

The following inning, the rest of the Red Raider damage would be dealt. After a pair of walks, it was the man with the hot bat who stepped up to the plate – and he did not miss his opportunity. Cullinan would, for the second-straight inning, take CUNE starter Frankie Cresta deep to straight away center field, making it 6-2 Northwestern.

Though Northwestern would not plate any more runs the rest of the way, it would be the Red Raider pitching staff who would hold the high-powered Bulldog offense at bay. Concordia would cut the deficit in half with a Joey Grabanski long ball in the third inning (6-4), with their final run coming in the fourth inning as a run would cross on a wild pitch.

Game Notes
  • Kip Cullinan swung a hot bat in the first game, hitting home runs (2) in his first two at-bats of the day.
  • On the day, he went 2-for-3 with five RBI and an intentional walk, just missing his third home run of the day in his final at-bat.
  • He's the first Red Raider to record a 5+ RBI day this season, marking his seventh multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Mason Porepp recorded the other RBI, going 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Evan Olesen and Sam Stanford also record multi-hit games in the series-opening win.
  • Brett Shelton (3-3) picks up his third win of the season on the mound behind 5.2 innings of five-hit baseball against a potent Bulldog line-up.
  • He recorded eight strike outs to just four walks, and allowing all five CUNE runs (three earned).
  • Brad Tornow would tally the final out of the sixth in his sixth appearance of the season.
  • For the sixth time this season, Ryan Reynolds tallied a save, as he got the Bulldogs to go down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning.

GAME 2: (RV) Concordia 14, Northwestern 1

Pitching Decisions
Win: Brady Roberts (2-4)
Loss: Caden Burgaske (2-0)
Save: None

How It Happened
It was another first inning long ball, which proved to be the start of a five home run day for the Bulldogs, as Joey Grabanski made it 1-0 as that score would hold through three innings, but it would turn into all Bulldogs in Game 2.

The Bulldogs would add a run to their lead in the top of the fourth inning, as a wild pitch advanced a runner to second and would be driven in with an RBI single. Concordia would tack on one more run in the frame, increasing their lead to 3-1 heading to the home half of the fourth.

Grabanski would hit his third home run of the series, driving in two more runs and making it 5-0 Bulldogs in the fifth. Seven more tallies would be added for the Bulldogs in the sixth, making it 12-0, scoring two or more runs from the fourth inning on.

Northwestern avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning, as Porepp drove in a run on an RBI fielder's choice.

The third home run of the day for Grabanski in the seventh would make the final score ultimately 14-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
