Women's Tennis Continues Upward Trend, Earns Second Win of Weekend

PELLA, Iowa – The Northwestern women's tennis team (5-6, 0-0 GPAC) enters Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play winners of three of their last four after defeating Central (Iowa) in Pella this morning.

Playing under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) scoring rules, the Raiders took two doubles and three singles points to defeat the Dutch 5-4 on the road.

Olya Furmanova (Fr., Minsk, Belarus), Julia Anderson (So., Rapid City, S.D.), and Wynne Vandersall (Sr., Martelle, Iowa) each won their singles matches. Furmanova won 6-4 and 6-3, Anderson had a pair of 6-2 set wins in the No. 3 slot, and Vandersall took two 6-1 wins.

The doubles pairing of Furmanova and Vandersall earned their sixth win of the season, while Ainslie Robinson (So., Luverne, Minn.) and Grace Twelmeyer (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) won the decisive doubles match 8-4 to help Northwestern to their fifth match win of the year.

"Winning by one is literally the difference of one," said head coach Jamie De Jong. "Every position is incredibly important. It doesn't matter where you line up on the courts.....they are all important. I am so proud of these classy ladies for their perseverance. Unlike most other sports, you can't just switch out players when the wheels start falling off the bus. If you're down, you just gotta find a way to pick yourself up. This game is always easier "said" than "done." College tennis is individual, but overall team focused. As a team, these ladies did good this weekend."

Up Next: Northwestern opens conference play next week, March 31, against the Doane Tigers. The match will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Crete, Nebraska.
