Raider Softball Begins Conference Slate with Sweep

Mikkelsen’s hitting, consistency from pitchers highlight the wins

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Wednesday was the start of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) softball season, as Northwestern (25-2, 2-0 GPAC) opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Dakota Wesleyan (5-16, 0-2 GPAC) at the American State Bank Sports Complex.

GAME 1: NWC 9, DWU 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Kameryn Etherington (12-2)
Loss: Katelyn Farris (2-7)
Save: None

How It Happened
Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) did not issue any walks in a complete-game win over Dakota Wesleyan in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, helping the Raiders to a 9-2 victory.

Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) opened up the game in the leadoff spot with her fourth home run of the season, a shot to left field that put the Raiders up 1-0. Northwestern then added two more in the second inning, as Mikkelsen recorded her second RBI of the game with a single to center that scored Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) from second. Then, with the bases loaded and one away, Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) drove in a run on a ground out, extending Northwestern's lead to three runs.

After Northwestern scored on a Mikkelsen sacrifice fly in the fifth and left the bases loaded, they used a four-run sixth inning to put the Tigers away. The Raiders scored on back-to-back plays as Ellie Jacobson (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa) drove in a run on the sacrifice fly before Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) used one of her four hits to bring a run home and make it 6-0. Billings later came around to score on an error, while Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) notched a hit to set the Raiders up 8-0.

Despite Dakota Wesleyan scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Billings hit an RBI single down the left field line in the seventh, adding another insurance run for Northwestern.

Game Notes
  • Gwen Mikkelsen hit her fourth home run of the season, going 2-4 with three RBI.
  • Ashtyn Billings had a 4-5 outing, driving in two runs.
  • Emily Strasser, Kameryn Etherington, and Madysn Grotewold each drew two walks.
  • Strasser also had two stolen bases, as the Raiders stole six bags as a team.
  • Etherington threw her sixth complete game of the season, striking out seven and not issuing any walks.
GAME 2: NWC 6, DWU 1

Pitching Decisions
Win: Kate Kralik (6-0)
Loss: Meghan Daffern (3-6)
Save: None

How It Happened
Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) went the distance and threw 10 strikeouts in Northwestern's second win of the night, a 6-1 decision over the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers.

Head coach Shane Bouman switched up the top of the order for game two, while Madysn Grotewold and Gwen Mikkelsen worked together to put a run on the board right away. Grotewold hit a bunt single, stole second, and then came home on Mikkelsen's RBI double. Northwestern's run in the first inning was the 13th time that the Raiders have scored in the first this season, remaining undefeated in such games.

The 1-0 score would hold until the third, as Mikkelsen continued her tear at the plate, hitting a single with a runner on third. With Mikkelsen on second following a stolen base, the Raiders doubled in two-straight plate appearances with Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Chloe Gallegos teaming up to put Northwestern up 4-0.

Kameryn Etherington would later double in the fifth, sending home two runs and capping off the scoring for the Raiders.

Kralik would only allow two hits for the rest of the game as she earned her sixth win in the circle.

Game Notes
Up Next: Northwestern continues conference play on Saturday, March 25 as they play the Jimmies of Jamestown. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. at the American State Bank Sports Complex in Sioux Center.
