Midland Sweeps Raiders in Competitive Pair of Games

Kirkeby shines on the mound, Vogel homers again

FREMONT, Neb. – In two competitive games, Northwestern (7-15, 1-3 GPAC) fell just short in both outings against Midland (11-10, 3-1 GPAC) in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) action on Tuesday evening.

GAME 1: Midland 2, NWC 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Owen Kelley (2-0)
Loss: Shane Geurink (1-1)

How It Happened
Four hits were all Midland needed on Monday afternoon to get past Northwestern, as the conference tilt on a cloudy day in Fremont was a 2-0 win for the hosting Warriors.

Hits were difficult to come by all day for both teams, as Dylan Kirkeby (Jr., Brandon, S.D.) and Midland's Owen Kelley were nearly untouchable on the mound through the first part of the game. Kirkeby gave up two singles in the top of the second, but then went on to throw three-straight no-hit innings.

Northwestern's only landed one runner in scoring position, as two runners were on in the bottom of the first, before a lineout ended the inning. The pitching and defense for both teams starred for the next six innings.

Then, in the top of the seventh, Midland took the lead as a one-out double by Hadyn Crawford scored the runner from first. Crawford later came around to score an insurance run for Midland on an RBI single from Trey Nichols.

After Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh and put the tying run at the plate, Midland turned two to bring the Raiders down to their final out. Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) kept the inning alive with a ground ball single into left, but Midland recorded the final out in the next at-bat to escape victorious.

Game Notes
  • Dylan Kirkeby threw six shutout innings, striking out 10 and only giving up two hits.
  • He hit 10 strikeouts for the second time this season (vs. Kansas Christian, Feb. 27)
  • Kip Cullinan, Eli Rash, and Sam Stanford each recorded a hit for the Raiders.

GAME 2: Midland 11, NWC 10 (9 innings)

Pitching Decisions
Win: Jacob Liquori (1-0)
Loss: Aidan Sieperda (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
It took two extra innings to decide a winner in Tuesday's slugfest, as Midland used a three-run top of the ninth to break the tie and come away with a doubleheader sweep.

Midland took an early lead in their half of the second before the Raiders used the bottom of the inning to gain their first lead of the game. Mo Watson scored on an error to tie the game, followed by RBIs from Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) and Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) to give the Raiders a 3-1 advantage after three.

After the Warriors put up three runs of their own in the fourth, Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to get Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) home off of his leadoff double.

With the game tied 4-4 in the top of the fifth, Midland's Hadyn Crawford hit his second home run of the game, a grand slam to put his team up 8-4.

The Raiders then answered in the bottom half, scoring four of their own on two singles, a sacrifice fly, and a walk. Northwestern had the bases full for much of the inning, as Jacob Kindhart (INFO), Vogel, Olesen, and Sam Stanford all recorded RBIs for their work at the plate.

In a game defined by offense, the defense took a turn for a couple innings, as the two teams were left to just one hit before going to extras.

Midland went on a two-out rally in the ninth to take a three-run lead as the bases were loaded via the walk before the Warriors used a bases-clearing double to take an 11-8 lead in the final frame.

Northwestern made some noise in their final chances, as Vogel blasted his second home run in two days with two away, but two runners were left on base to end the game.

Game Notes
  • Noa Vogel hit his second home run of the series, going 3-5 with three RBI.
  • Evan Olesen, Sam Stanford, and Mo Watson also recorded multiple hits.
  • Colton Korver threw three strikeouts in an inning of relief.
  • The Raiders drew five walks as a team.
  • Northwestern's 13 hits tied a season-high (Mar. 11 vs. Rochester).
  • It was the fifth time this season that the Raiders scored at least 10 runs.
Up Next: The Raiders will continue conference play this weekend, facing Briar Cliff in a doubleheader on Friday, March 24 at 3:00 p.m. in Orange City.
