Kip Cullinan hits third home run of the season, goes 4-for-5 in Game 2

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College baseball team (9-15, 3-4 GPAC) picked up a pair of two run wins against Briar Cliff (12-10, 0-6 GPAC) at Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff University Saturday afternoon to open up a four-game set.

GAME 1: Northwestern 4, Briar Cliff 2

Pitching Decisions
Win: Brett Shelton (2-3)
Loss: Brett Sitzmann (1-2)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (3)

How It Happened
Northwestern used stout pitching and timely hitting to pick up their second Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) win of the season in Sioux City. The Raiders would notch a run per inning between the second and fifth innings, which proved enough to secure the victory.

Briar Cliff put the first run on the board in the first inning as a pair of doubles made it 1-0 Chargers after one. It didn't take the Red Raiders long to respond, as they would pull even in the second without recording a hit in the frame. A Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) walk and a pair of wild pitches would set him up to score on a Sam Stanford (Jr. Los Angeles, Calif.) RBI ground out.

In the following inning (3rd), Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) would drive in the go-ahead run with a single to right field to take the 2-1 lead, and Northwestern would not surrender the lead the rest of the way. In the fourth inning, Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would make it 3-1 NWC with an RBI single to right field of his own, which would prove to be the game-winning run.

The Chargers would pull within one run in the bottom half of the fourth (3-2), scoring on a passed ball. However, Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would himself single to right field in the fifth to make it 4-2. Ryan Reynolds (Sr., Yorkville, Ill.) would come in to close the door on BCU in the seventh for the victory.

How It Happened
A pair of three-run innings proved to propel the Red Raiders to the doubleheader sweep of Briar Cliff Saturday afternoon. Kip Cullinan was on fire in Game 2, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, and 3 RBI in the 8-6 Northwestern victory.

Northwestern was the first to plate runs in the second game of the doubleheader, taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Ethan Buckner (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) put the ball in play and a Charger error would plate a pair of Raider runs. Later, Buckner would come home to score on a set play on the bases.

It would not take Briar Cliff long to catch up. With the bases loaded with just one out, Walter Hunt would clear the bases with a grand slam to give BCU the 4-3 lead after two full innings.

The two teams would remain scoreless until the sixth inning, as the starters began to settle in. In the sixth, it was Cullinan's turn to go deep, scoring Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) and NWC retook the lead at 5-4. Later in the frame, Watson would single to center field, driving in Porepp, making it 6-4 Northwestern.

The following frame, Cullinan would do more damage with an RBI double to right field, once again scoring Olesen, as the Raiders. A sacrifice fly from Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) would drive in the final insurance run for NWC, making it 8-4 in the ninth.

The Chargers would look to fight back in their final at-bat of the game, down four entering the bottom of the ninth. A Cam Riemer long ball would cut the Raider lead in half (8-6) with two away in the frame. Once again, Reynolds would be called upon to get the final out of the game, entering the with the tying run on first base. He would record the out needed with a strike out, as NWC swept the doubleheader.

  • He allowed just three hits, four runs (all earned); while walking five and punching out four.
  • Brad Tornow and Shane Geurink both tossed 2/3 of an inning in relief, neither allowing a hit.
