Home Runs Deciding Factor in Monday Doubleheader

FREMONT, Neb. – The longball played a big role in Monday's Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opener, as the Northwestern baseball team (7-13, 1-1 GPAC) split a doubleheader with Midland (9-10, 1-1 GPAC) in Fremont.

GAME 1: NWC 0, Midland 1

Pitching Decisions
Win: Lucas Hamzeh (2-1)
Loss: Brett Shelton (1-3)
Save: None

How It Happened
A pitcher's duel was decided by a fifth-inning home run as Midland escaped the first game of GPAC play with a 1-0 win.

The Raiders opened the game with a scoring chance as Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) hit a one-out double to center before being pushed over to third in the following at-bat. Despite the runner in scoring position, however, Midland kept matters scoreless in the opening frame.

After two shutdown innings, Northwestern ran into trouble in the third, as the bases were loaded with two away. Then, as he did much of the game, Brett Shelton (Sr., Clive, Iowa) kept Midland off the scoreboard by recording the third out in foul territory.

The fifth inning had plenty of action as Northwestern tried to set up the double steal with runners on the corners, but Midland cut it down at home plate for the third out. Scoreless in the bottom half, the Warriors used one swing of the bat to take the lead, a home run that made the score 1-0.

The 1-0 score would hold for the remainder of the contest, as Midland only allowed one baserunner in the final two innings.

Game Notes
  • Brett Shelton was solid on the mound, striking out three batters and only allowing one run over six innings.
  • Kip Cullinan posted a 2-3 mark at the plate.
  • Colby Shelton also recorded a hit for the Raiders.
  • In the loss, Northwestern only struck out once.
GAME 2: NWC 6, Midland 5

Pitching Decisions
Win: Shane Geurink (1-0)
Loss: Connor Petersen (0-1)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (2)

How It Happened
Noa Vogel and Kip Cullinan both homered in an offensive showcase in game two of the day, an exciting matchup that saw the Raiders end the day with a split.

After three no-hit innings from Brady Roberts (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa), Northwestern's offense got on the board with a one-out home run from Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.), his second round-tripper of the year and the 13th of his career.

Midland took advantage of scoring opportunities even without recording a hit in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on two walks, two hit by pitches, a pair of fielder's choices, and a wild pitch, sending the Warriors up 4-1 after four innings.

The Raiders used the fifth to crawl back within shouting distance, scoring three runs to make it 4-4. Cullinan followed up an Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) double that put two runners in scoring position with a 2-RBI single. Following a pitching change by Midland, Vogel reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Cullinan home and tied the game.

Both teams traded runs in their halves of the sixth, with Eli Rash (Jr., Lake Lotawana, Mo.) first bringing Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) around to give the Raiders the lead. Midland scored on an error in the bottom of the inning to knot it back at 5-5.

To begin the seventh, Cullinan continued his efficient day at the plate with his most important hit of the game, a home run to right that would prove to be the game-winner.

Ryan Reynolds (Sr., Yorkville, Ill.) entered for the save opportunity in the bottom of the inning, striking out the side to give Northwestern a win on the first day of conference action.

Game Notes
  • Kip Cullinan went 3-4 with three RBI, including the game-winning home run.
  • Noa Vogel also homered, going 1-4 with two driven in.
  • On the mound, Brady Roberts threw four innings, allowing no hits and striking out seven batters.
  • Shane Geurink (Jr., Norwalk, Iowa) earned his first win of the season, while Ryan Reynolds notched his second save.
  • Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) went 2-4 as the designated hitter.
Up Next: Northwestern and Midland will meet up for another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Fremont, Nebraska.
