Raider Offense Explodes for 34 Runs in Sweep of Rochester

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Northwestern College baseball team (5-12, 0-0 GPAC) picked up two big wins in the Florida sun, as the offense erupts for 34 runs on 25 hits in the doubleheader sweep of Rochester (Mich.) (2-10, 0-0 WHAC), Mason Porepp and Evan Olesen sparks offense with five hits, and a combined 11 RBIs on the day.
 
Game 1: Northwestern 15, Rochester 3

How It Happened
A Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) started the high-scoring affair in the top-half of the first inning. Rochester would later tie the game in the third inning, making it 1-1, but the rest was all Red Raiders.
 
In the fourth inning, the Raiders would strike for four runs and would never look back. Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would drive in what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single, as Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.
 
Northwestern would erupt for five more runs in the sixth inning, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. The scoring was highlighted by a pair of doubles from Vogel and Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa). Rochester would get their final run of the game thanks to a solo home run in the bottom half of the frame.
 
Taking advantage of being the 'visiting' team in Game 1, the Red Raiders would plate five more runs in the seventh inning to securely take the game 15-3. Defensive miscues and a pair of RBI singles from Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa) and Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) highlighted the scoring.
 
Game Notes
  • NWC scored first for the sixth time this season, improving their record to 2-4 when recording the first tally.
  • In back-to-back games, the Raiders set a new season-high for hits in a game (13).
  • Mason Porepp hits his second home run of the season, bringing him into a tie with Isaac Short for the team lead.
  • Noa Vogel and Evan Olesen both record three hits in the first game, while Mason Porepp and Colby Shelton both notch two hits.
  • Four Red Raiders notch multiple RBIs, all with two: Olesen, Porepp, Vogel, C. Shelton.
  • Vogel improves his on-base streak to 10 games.
  • Brett Shelton (1-2) picks up his first win of the season with his second-straight outing of six innings.
  • He allowed just four hits, three runs (two earned) and recorded nine strike outs and just one walk.
  • Jakeb Swallow made his fourth appearance of the season, pitching the seventh inning.
  • He allowed just one hit and recorded one strike out.

How It Happened
Porepp brought home the first run of Game 2 with an RBI single to left field, scoring Olesen. Watson would belt his second home run of the season later in the game, making it 2-0 NWC after the first. Just like in Game 1, the Warriors struck back with a pair of runs in the third to draw even, 2-2.
 
Before you knew it, in the third and fourth innings alone, the Red Raiders struck for 17 runs en route to their third-straight game with 10+ runs and 10+ hits. The scoring barrage came with three RBI doubles by Porepp (3rd), Olesen (4th), and Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.) (4th). Porepp's double came with the bases loaded, clearing them for three RBI. Olesen's and Kindhart's both drove in two runs.
 
The Warriors would pick up a run in the fifth inning, but it was much too late, as the Red Raiders took Game 2, 19-3.
 
Game Notes
  • Sam Stanford notches his 100th career hit as a Red Raider in Game 2 (3-for-4).
  • It marks the third-straight game with 10+ hits.
  • The 12 hits ties the Judson game (Mar. 10) for the second-most hits in a game this season.
  • Again, Northwestern struck first in Game 2, bringing their record up to 3-4 when scoring the first run.
  • In the first two meetings between the two teams, NWC now holds a 2-0 series advantage.
  • The Red Raiders are now 3-1 this season when scoring 10+ runs in a game.
  • Mason Porepp and Sam Stanford both notched three hits on the game, while Evan Olesen had two.
  • Porepp increases his team-leading multi-hit games up to six.
  • He also led the team with four RBI on the day (3-for-4, 2 runs) as it marks the most RBI by a Red Raider in a game this season.  
  • Mo Watson hit his second home run of the season, making it a three-way tie for the team lead.
  • Zach Kinney (ND) made his first-career start in Game 2, his third appearance of the season.
  • He tossed 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. He recorded three strike outs and five walks.
  • Jacob Thurm came in relief in the third, throwing 1.1 innings.
  • Brad Tornow (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, throwing three strong innings of no-hit baseball; striking out eight of the nine batters he faced.
  • Tornow now leads all bullpen arms with his 10 punch outs this season.
Up Next: The Raiders will play two more games in Florida on Monday, March 13 with games against Purdue Northwest (Ind.) and Aquinas (Mich.) before heading back to Northwest Iowa.
