Big Weekend at the Plate Lands Mikkelsen GPAC Player of the Week Accolades

Raiders sweep Opening Week league honors, off to the best start in program history

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Gwen Mikkelsen picked up the first weekly honors from Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) after a stellar final weekend at the Dordt Dome Tournament in Sioux Center. The junior picked up her first two home runs of the season and hit .667, as the Northwestern College softball team broke last season's best start in program history.

Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) held a blistering hot bat this past weekend at the American State Bank Sports Complex. She hit .667 (10-for-15) and hit her first two home runs of the season. She drove in seven RBIs in the four wins, leading the team on the weekend. She was responsible for over one fourth of the teams hits on the weekend.

Northwestern shut out three of the four teams this weekend: (RV) Bellevue (6-0), Avila (Mo.) (10-0), and Waldorf (6-0). They started the weekend with a 10-5 win over Dakota State (S.D.).

"Gwen has spent a lot of time working on her game, hard work pays off," notes head softball coach Shane Bouman. "We are glad she is a Red Raider."

In the field, she was a perfect 7-for-7 in her fielding chances, holding a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on the season through the first 16 games of the season.

On the season, she now has a team-best .413 batting average and a 1.125 OPS, while also leading the team in slugging percentage at .652 (based on the minimum requirement of 2PA/G and 75% of games played). She's one of five Red Raiders to have driven in 10+ RBIs this season (12), while also pacing the team with her five doubles.

The Red Raiders are off to a 16-0 start, the best start in program history, topping last year's 14-0 start. NWC is one of nine teams in the NAIA to be undefeated, and just one of three to reach the double digit wins mark without a loss.

Mikkelsen joins teammate Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa), who was named the Pitcher of the Week, as Northwestern swept the opening week weekly league honors.
