Raiders Drop Two Games Games on First Day of Rube Foster Classic

NWC returns to the diamond on Monday to conclude Classic

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Northwestern College baseball team (0-6, 0-0 GPAC) opened up the 2023 Rube Foster Classic on a sunny, clear day in Kansas with a pair of games hosted by Baker University.

GAME 1: Baker 4, Northwestern 3

Pitching Decisions
Win: Jaxon Kutch (1-0)
Loss: Brett Shelton (0-2)
Save: Luke Smith (2)

How It Happened
Baker would strike first in the contest with a run in the bottom half of the first inning on an RBI single through the right side. Northwestern would limit the damage to just the one run in the frame, leaving a pair of runners on base.

The Wildcats would put a runner in scoring position with two outs in the third, but Brett Shelton (Sr., Clive, Iowa) would get out of it with a routine ground ball to third to end the threat, and keep the score 1-0 Baker.

The Baker starter, Jaxon Kutch would find a rhythm early on holding the Raiders without a hit through the first three innings. Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would break through in the fourth inning with a single to right center field, marking the first Raider base runner of the contest.

In the home half of the fourth, the Wildcats would plate another run on a double to make it 2-0 halfway through the contest.

Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) would get the first extra base hit – and first Red Raider in scoring position – with a double of his own down the left field line. He would advance to third on a wild pitch with just one away in the top of the fifth. Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) would do his job and bring Stanford home with an RBI groundout to first, cutting the Baker lead in half at 2-1 in the fifth inning.

Baker would respond with two more runs in the home half of the fifth, pushing their lead up to 4-1. After a lead-off walk from Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) in the sixth, and later Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) and walk from Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) would see the bases loaded with two away in the inning. Stanford would come up with the big hit, a single up the middle, to plate Olsen and Cullinan, as Northwestern once again got within one run, 4-3.

Game Notes
  • Sam Stanford led the offense going 2-for-3 with his first RBIs of the season (2) and a double.
  • Mason Porepp records the other Red Raider hit.
  • Vogel's RBI groundout marked his first RBI and Stanford's two RBIs both marked the first RBI of the season for them both.
  • Brett Shelton pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned). He walked and struck out four hitters in the outing.
  • Shane Geurink came in relief of Shelton, tossing one inning and walking and striking out one hitter.
  • Colton Korver would come in to pitch the sixth inning, keeping it a one run game, as he tallied one strike out.

GAME 2: (RV) Columbia 6, Northwestern 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Bryce Taylor (4-0)
Loss: Brady Roberts (0-2)
Save: None

How It Happened
The competition wouldn't get any easier in the second game of the day, facing a receiving votes Columbia (Mo.) squad. Defensive miscues would lead to the Cougars jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning, thanks to a pair of doubles.

The two teams would remain scoreless until the final frame, when the Cougars tacked on one more run on a sacrifice fly to increase their lead to 6-0. Columbia would go on to take the game by the final score of 6-0.

Game Notes
  • Drew Dykstra and Sam Stanford recorded the two Red Raider hits in the contest.
  • Evan Olesen recorded one walk.
  • Brady Roberts tossed six innings, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned).
  • He struck out eight and issued just one walk.
  • Roberts now just needs 37.0 innings and 61 strikeouts to own both records in NWC baseball history.
  • Zach Kinney made his first appearance of the season, pitching his first full inning as a Red Raider, pitching the seventh allowing a run and striking out two.
Up Next: Northwestern will conclude the Rube Foster Classic on Monday, February 27 with another pair of games against Kansas Christian and Park (Mo.) at the Royals Youth Academy in Kansas City.
