Northwestern Tallies Two Wins in Kansas City; Erupts for 13 Runs

Raiders get two great outings from Dylan Kirkeby and Drew Dykstra

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The bats came alive and the pitching was stout on another clear and sunny day in the Kansas City area, as the Northwestern College baseball team (2-6, 0-0 GPAC) swept the day to conclude the 2023 Rube Foster Classic with two wins over Kansas Christian and Park (Mo.).

GAME 1: Northwestern 10, Kansas Christian 1

Pitching Decisions
Win: Dylan Kirkeby (1-1)
Loss: Juan Polo (N/A)
Save: None

How It Happened
The Raiders put the pressure on early in the first game of the day as a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning. After a Kansas Christian (KCC) passed ball, Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) put the ball in play with two outs and reached via an error, plating the first two runs of the game. KCC would pick up a run themselves in the home half, as NWC would lead 2-1 after the first inning of play.

The Raider bats came alive in fifth inning, as they would extend their leadup to 7-1 with five runs in the frame. Both Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) and Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) would knock in runs with RBI singles. With runners on second and third with one away, Isaac Short (Fr., Grimes, Iowa) would rope a ball down the right field line for his first collegiate triple.

The next inning, a Stanford double would plate Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) to make it a seven-run contest. In the top half of the seven, Cullinan himself would join in the RBI party with a two-RBI double of his own, making it 10-1 Northwestern, the score the Raiders would go on to win by.

After surrendering the first inning run, Dylan Kirkeby (Jr., Brandon, S.D.) was lights out on the mound for Northwestern. He allowed just five hits in his six innings pitched, while striking out 10 Eagle hitters. He did not walk a batter and surrendered just the one run.

Game Notes
  • NWC was aggressive on the base paths in the first game of the day, going four-for-four.
  • Three Red Raiders notched 2 RBIs in the win: Kip Cullinan, Noa Vogel, and Isaac Short – all with two each.
  • Vogel went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, while walking once.
  • Isaac Short went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while also walking once.
  • Mason Porepp joined Short, going 2-for-4 with one walk.
  • Dylan Kirkeby recorded a phenomenal second start today, picking up his first win of the season (1-1).
  • He tossed six innings and surrendered just five hits and one run, while striking out 10 and issuing no walks.
  • His 10 strike outs is the most since his 10 against Dordt last season, he now has three games in his career with double digit strike outs (career-high being 11 against Dordt in 2021).
  • Brady Nicolet threw the seventh inning in relief, making his second appearance of the young season.
  • He faced the minimum three hitters, striking out two of them and not allowing a hit.
GAME 2: Northwestern 3, Park 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Drew Dykstra (1-1)
Loss: Hunter Edwards (1-1)
Save: Ryan Reynolds (1)

How It Happened
The momentum would carry into the second game of the day, as the Raiders would go up 3-0 after two innings of play. Vogel would pick up his second double of the day in the first inning, bringing home Stanford, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Raiders would put two guys on in the second inning with one away, utilizing a sacrifice bunt from Ethan Buckner (Jr., Aurora, Colo.). Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would make good with runners in scoring position with a two-RBI single to left field.

Game Notes
  • Northwestern tallied their first shut out win of the season.
  • The three Park hits allowed is the lowest by the Raider pitching staff this season.
  • Seven different Raiders tallied hits in the win today, no one recorded more than one.
  • Of those hits, three were doubles from Drew Dykstra, Noa Vogel, and Evan Olesen.
  • Mason Porepp picked up his first multi-RBI game of the season with his two RBI in the win.
  • NWC tallied three more stolen bases in Game 2: Bryce Click, Porepp, and TJ Silliman.
  • Jacob Kindhart is the third Raider to make a start behind the dish for NWC this season.
  • Drew Dykstra picked up his first win on the mound this season in his second start of 2023.
  • He threw six innings and allowed just three hits and struck out four, while recording two free passes (1 BB, 1 HBP).
  • Ryan Reynolds came into shut the door for Northwestern in the seventh, facing four batters and not allowing a run or a hit in the outing.
  • Reynolds picks up his first - and the team's first – save of the campaign.
