How It Happened
Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) hit two home runs in a game that Northwestern never trailed in, helping the Red Raiders open their fourth weekend of play with a 10-5 win over Dakota State (S.D.).

Northwestern scored in their first ups at the plate, as a two-out single from Mikkelsen drove in Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) after her bunt single to lead off the inning.

The Raider lead ballooned in the second, as Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) doubled to center with the bases loaded, extending the advantage to 4-0. In the next at-bat, Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) recorded her ninth RBI of the season, singling to right to bring Boeve across home plate.

Dakota State used their next plate appearances to trim the deficit, scoring three runs on two hits, with two runs coming off of a ball over the fence.

In the bottom of the third, the Raiders caught the Trojan defense guessing, employing the double-steal with Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) going to second and Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) taking home to stretch their lead back to three runs. Later in the inning, Grotewold came across to score on a similar play, this time with Boeve stealing second, making the score 7-3.

Mikkelsen, already 2-2 on the day, led off the bottom of the fourth win a home run pulled to left, her first long ball of the season to make the score 8-3. Cassidy Gors (Fr., Tea, S.D.) also added a Northwestern run in the fifth after the Trojans scored two in the top of the inning.

With the score now 9-5 in the sixth, Mikkelsen recorded her fourth hit of the game, another home run to center field that put the game on ice.

Game Notes
  • Northwestern hit home runs in back-to-back games (Etherington vs. Peru State, 2/18) after going their first 11 games without a round-tripper.
  • Mikkelsen's four hits tied a career-high.
  • Her two home runs were the most for a Raider since Emily Strasser hit two against College of Saint Mary on April 23, 2021.
  • Maddie Kvatek picked up two stolen bases of four total for Northwestern.
  • Jennifer Boeve also had three runs batted in.
  • Ashtyn Billings scored two runs and drew a walk.

How It Happened
A late-inning scoring frenzy gave the Raiders some insurance runs, helping Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) earn a win in the circle on Friday afternoon, striking out nine batters in a complete-game shutout. The Raider win spelled the first loss of the season for Bellevue (Neb.) (4-1, 0-0 NSAA).

Emily Strasser got things started for Northwestern, driving in two runs on a one-out double to left to give the Raiders an early 2-0 lead.

Hits were difficult to come by from that point on, as the two teams combined for only four hits over the next five innings.

In the top of the fourth, Bellevue threatened with the bases loaded and only one out, but Etherington caught the next batter swinging and retired the inning with a flyout to center field.

Northwestern began to pile it on in their half of the sixth, as Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) got the party started with a leadoff walk. A couple batters later, Maddie Kvatek found a hit into center field that allowed Jewel Bergstrom (Fr., Boyden, Iowa) to score as the courtesy runner. Kvatek then stole third and advanced home on a Cassidy Gors RBI double to make it 4-0. Then, with one out, Ashtyn Billings crossed home plate on a fielder's choice, and heads-up baserunning from Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) ran 60 more feet for the sixth Raider run of the game.

Game Notes
  • Kameryn Etherington earned her sixth win of the year and second-straight complete-game shutout.
  • Emily Strasser drove in two runs, going 1-3 at the plate.
  • Maddie Kvatek and Cassidy Gors also had an RBI each.
  • It was the first time in eight games that Northwestern had more strikeouts than walks drawn.
  • Head coach Shane Bouman is now just one win away from No. 400 for his career.

Up Next: Northwestern will have one final pair of games at the Dordt Dome Classic, facing off against Avila (Mo.) and Waldorf (Iowa) tomorrow. First pitches are at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively, at the American State Bank Sports Complex.
