Men's Basketball to Host Concordia in GPAC Quarterfinals

Raiders and Bulldogs split the season series

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern men's basketball team (20-8, 13-7 GPAC) earned the fourth seed and the opportunity to host in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) quarterfinals. The Raiders are set to face fifth-seeded Concordia (Neb.) (17-11, 11-9 GPAC) on Wednesday night in the Bultman Center.

The winner of Wednesday's matchup will move on to face the winner of 8-seeded Hastings and top-seeded Jamestown in the GPAC semifinals on Saturday, February 25.

THE 2023 GPAC TOURNAMENT
  • The regular season champions, the Jamestown Jimmies, will be the top seed in the conference tournament.
  • Jamestown, Morningside, Dordt, and Northwestern earned the right to host this year, as the 1-4 sees, respectively.
  • On Tuesday night, Briar Cliff is at Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan is at Dordt.
  • The Wednesday night slate has Concordia at Northwestern and Hastings at Jamestown.

TOURNAMENT TIME
  • Northwestern holds a 32-15 record all-time in the GPAC tournament.
  • The Raiders have won six GPAC tournament titles, last winning in 2021 over Mount Marty as the No. 3 seed.
  • In all postseason games (GPAC & NAIA), Northwestern is 52-26 under Korver (2001-present).
  • Northwestern holds a 14-7 record in the GPAC quarterfinals.
  • The winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner of 8-seeded Hastings at top-seeded Jamestown.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Matt Onken (R-Jr., Marshall, Minn.) hit a season-high 31 points in a loss at Hastings.
  • Northwestern fell 69-64 as Hastings snuck into the No. 8 seed for the conference tournament.
  • Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) also scored in double-figures, adding 10 points with six rebounds and four assists.
  • It was Hastings' first win over Northwestern since 2018.
NORTHWESTERN NOTES
  • Craig Sterk (Jr., McBain, Mich.) is now 22nd all-time in career points, with 1,538.
  • He joined the 700-rebound club last week, becoming the 17th Raider to reach the milestone.
  • Head coach Kris Korver has used the starting five of Geddes, DeMeulenaere, Carlson, Onken, and Sterk in 23 games.
THE SERIES
  • Northwestern leads the all-time series 54-28.
  • They split the season series with Concordia, with both teams winning on their home court.
  • Northwestern won the last meeting 79-65 on January 21.
  • Dillon Carlson led all scorers with 22 points on 9-14 shooting.
  • Grant DeMeulenaere (Sr., Altoona, Iowa) posted a season-high 17 points.
  • The Raiders and Bulldogs are meeting in the conference tournament for the fifth time, as Northwestern has won four of the matchups.
  • Their last GPAC tournament clash was in the 2020 quarterfinals, when Concordia won 74-63 in Seward.
HOME COOKIN'
  • Northwestern held firm on their home-court advantage this season, going 11-1 in the Bultman Center.
  • Since the 2020-21 season, NWC is 40-4 at home

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
  • In their last game, a loss at Dakota Wesleyan, Noah Schutte hit a career-high 36 points. It was the most points for a Bulldog since 2017.
  • Gage Smith moved into second place on Concordia's all-time rebounding list last week with 880 career boards.
  • Concordia enters the tournament as the defending GPAC tournament champions and winners of two of the last three titles.
  • The Bulldogs have won four GPAC tournament titles since the conference's inception.

  • Tickets will only be sold at the gate.
  • Ticket prices: $10 for adults and $3 for students (K-College).
  • GPAC students with valid student ID get in the contest free.
  • No institutional season passes are allowed, only NAIA issued passes are allowed.
