Ottawa Bests Red Raiders in Season-Opening Series

Evan Olesen hits first home run of the season

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Northwestern College baseball team (0-4, 0-0 GPAC) concluded the Opening Weekend series with (RV) Ottawa University (8-5, 0-0 KCAC) with another twinbill this afternoon in eastern Kansas. The Raiders dropped both contests, but Evan Olesen cranked his first home run of the season.

GAME 1: (RV) Ottawa 13, Northwestern 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Flynn Ridley (2-1)
Loss: Dylan Kirkeby (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
A lead-off triple for Ottawa goes for not as start Dylan Kirkeby (Jr., Brandon Valley, S.D.) buckled down with a pop out in foul territory, a strike out, and a routine ground ball to second to keep the game scoreless through one inning of play.

The Raiders tallied their first hit in the third inning when Wede implemented a small ball strategy. Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) led off the frame with a well-executed bunt to third, beating the throw. Eli Rash (Jr., Lake Lowatana) would advance him to second on a sac bunt, but NWC would be unable to bring him around to score.

Ottawa would put up a nine-spot in the fifth inning to take total control of the contest, hitting two long balls in a grand slam and a solo shot. The Braves would go on to take Game 3 with a shutout, 13-0.

Game Notes
  • Northwestern was outhit 9-3 in the contest, while committing two errors in the first game of the day.
  • Mason Porepp was 2-for-3 on the day, while Drew Dykstra picked up the only other Raider hit.
  • Dylan Kirkeby threw 4.0 innings, allowing four runs (none earned) – striking out six and walking five.
  • In relief, Evan Olesen finished the game with his 1.2 innings – the only Raider in relief to toss a full inning.

GAME 2: (RV) Ottawa 8, Northwestern 3

Pitching Decisions
Win: Van Rabe (1-0)
Loss: Drew Dykstra (0-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
For the first time in the series, Northwestern got on the board first in the first inning. Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) singled up the middle to lead things off and a sacrifice bunt put him in scoring position. He would come around to score after Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) put the ball in play and the Ottawa defense threw it around the diamond, allowing Olesen to come around to score.

It wouldn't take long for the Braves to even it up, as they struck for a run in the bottom half of the frame thanks to an RBI double down the left field line. The game would be knotted up a 1-1 heading to the second inning.

A two-run Ottawa blast would put them up for good in the second. They would tack four more runs on in the third inning to jump out to a 7-1 advantage through three full innings.

The Raiders would put up a pair of runs in the fourth. After an Aidan Sieperda (Fr., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) walk, Olesen would blast one over the left field wall to make it 7-3. It marked the third Red Raider home run of the young season.

Ottawa would score once more in the sixth, making it 8-3 as would be the final score. Shane Geurink (Jr., Norwalk, Iowa) would come in and get the final out of the frame, limiting the damage to just one Braves run and leaving the bases loaded.

Game Notes
  • Evan Olesen went 2-for-3 to lead the Raider offense in Game 4, scoring two of the three runs and hitting his first home run of the season and driving in two runs.
  • Olsen also scored two of the three Red Raiders runs.
  • Mason Porepp and Mo Watson recorded the other two of NWC's four hits in Game 4.
  • Noa Vogel recorded the first stolen base of the season for the Red Raiders.
  • Aidan Sieperda made his first-career start in the second game, playing first base and batting seventh.
  • Drew Dykstra made his first start of the season on the mount, going 2.1 innings.
  • Ryan Reynolds was the first of four out of the bullpen, going 2.2 innings and allowing two hits and punching out two.

Up Next: Northwestern will head back down to the area, heading for Kansas City, Mo. and Baldwin City, Kan. for four games next weekend for the Rube Foster Classic.
